the only way to find the fault is to put marks (paint on the nut or spline like a seal ) at every point in the steering system so when it moves you can see the part that the paint has broken the "seal" . but it sounds like the box

ive done many clutches on discos and defenders. i would say you cant just slide the box back to get the clutch out on a Defender but it may be possible on a Disco . and they put in whatever junk clutch they had and thought it would last long enough to get away with it
