Digging around I found this useful link, it doesnt look such a hard job to replace the gear if its worn, has anybody on here ever done this in situ on a defender? Also I cant see any mention of replacing the worn shaft, any advice on how to do that too? I might give this a go over the next...

Mine does this, and it is not the A frame balljoint, I can avoid it mostly by careful clutch work - but today noticed it a lot on the motorway at about 65-70 mph, when pulling on and off the power. What is the solution? I am guessing its not cheap, nor and easy DIY job?

Why do people generally replace with recon rather than stripping and changing seals? There are numerous seal kits available on ebay for about 15 quid. Is it really such a difficult job? scuse my ignorance! Just trying to decide which way to tackle this before my next mot. defender 90 200 tdi

when you put the new dust cap on, warm it up in hot water for an hour before fitting, that will soften it. I had the same problem with mine. The breather also was blocked on mine. I changed the whole screw in thingy on top of the axle as well as the pipe.
