    Torch the f****r

Blimey guys, I am beginning to feel guilty. I have had a 300tdi auto for a 12 month now and the only thing I have replaced is the aircon pump, due to the wires being broken off. I tow a very large and heavy caravan with it, and it's been magnificent. So much so I have bought a TD5 auto. I have...

    bit of advice please

I have to say the 300 tdi does seem to be a more reliable vehicle than the TD5 (I have both) but it does feel and sound very agricultural compared to the TD5, the good thing about the 300 tho' is that there are loads of spares available secondhand.

    300tdi vibration

You do not state any speed details. I would suspect the front propshaft universal joints, these tend to cause a vibration when under power which fades when the power is taken off, or the clutch is dipped. You can try greasing it although by the sound of it, it has gone past that option. Also...

Key broken off in ignition switch

Try banging it on a block of wood with the key slot point down it may dislodge it. The only other way would be to use a very fine drill (same as the thickness of the key) and drill it in the centre with the intention of collapsing the remains in the lock and thus allowing them to fall out.

OK, I admit it, I am a clueless woman, 300TDI MOT Failure help please?

Nowadays the MoT station actually logs into the Dept of Transport computer at the DVLA when they are carrying out the MoT, so all will be logged. I think when you go back for a 'retest', the computer automatically brings up the failure sheet so that any garage can then carryout the inspection...

    Automatic Gearbox Flashing selector

Yes, you can do it yourself, and yes there is a special setting tool but you can with care set it up yourself. The part is actually known as a 'gear position selector switch' and you will get some 'you want what?' if you ask for an XYZ switch, I know I called Paddocks yesterday who said it. It...

    300tdi steering

It sounds as though someone has perhaps adjusted the steering box using the grub screw and locknut on the top plate and made it too tight. I would certainly check this before looking alswhere such as swivel joints etc.,

    Lost keys/fob discovery 1

There's a moral to this saga, always get spare keys / fobs sorted when you first get the vehicle as the above sounds a right head / ball ache.

HUOOOGGE Turbo lag on 2.5 TDi

My 300 tdi auto on a 98 plate flies off the mark especially when cold, in fact I think its a little bit quicker than my TD5 initially. It is even quick with the caravn on the back. The only mod done is the EGR removal thing and clean out the intercooler. I'm in Bristol and spend a considerable...

    Finally I belong

If you use Sikaflex and it does have to come out for any reason in the future, i.e., mechanism failure, you will do more damage getting it out than anything that Silicon could do. If you don't like to use a silicon based sealer then use a non hardening sealant like gutter seal. Sikaflex /...

    Discovery wont start...

That sounds like a bad connection on the starter or perhaps the starter solenoid is faulty. I would firstly clean these connections and if necessary, use a single jump lead to put a direct power connection to the starter just to see if it then turns over, if so then you have a bad connection in...

    non starter

When jumping the battery, does the windows work then ? this should give you some indication of a fault either with the battery or the connections to the starter motor.

    what have people payed

Good on yer fella, that is definitely a 3 shredded wheat job, did you have 4 hands on the box to put it back in. ?

    TD5 Auto box

I am now convinced that it is the gear selector position switch (known as the XYZ switch) on the side of the gearbox. I did ring round last night including Paddocks but it now looks like its a call to the Main Stealers and £130 ish whipped from my bank account. They are a self fit option, not...

    Mpg ????

You should be able to get 35 ish really from a 300 tdi, my auto returns that easily and 25 towing a caravan. They are great vehicles. What sort of mileage has yours done and is it a manual ?. removing the EGR certainly improves performance but you need to also clean out the intercooler for best...

    TD5 Auto box

Thanks Charles. By coincidence when I checked my 300 tdi after I first aquired it, the gearbox oil was well up the stick way past the lines on the dipstick, and despite checking it several times and getting the same result, I assumed I was doing something wrong. It drives superbly even when...

    TD5 Auto box

An update - I got home from work all enthusiastic about my new found knowledge and quickly got changed and put the disco up on ramps. Luckily my drive slopes so this then made the disco level. I let the car warm up while I got myself organised with something to lie on and a good light, it then...

    straight through for disco2

Does this give any performance improvements or just a boy racer sound and the need to turn the stereo up.

    High pressure in cooling system

Does the heater get hot and stay hot and is there any smoke (whiteish) from the exhaust. You may just have an airlock in the heater which could also be blocked by rubbish in the mattrix, perhaps some flushing agent would clear that. You can get the system pressuried which would confirm if the HG...

    A positive thread!

My 300 tdi is costing and causing me problems. It runs faultlessly, economical, comfortable and tows a large twin axle caravan. The expense has come in the form of a TD5 purchase and the problems is that the missus will no longer come out in my sports car, it's tooooo low, and not as comfortable...
