When my thermostat was failing, it did the same as yours for a while and progressively got worse until it wouldn't get past the quarter mark - so yours could be on it's way out.

Quick Q - having now done this, would it be advisable to use a bit of epoxy to seal the hole even more than just the rubber that came with the cable? Or is that rubber grommet sufficient?

If you mean the sheet style seal behind the rear door plastic trim, then i changed that - this will sound a bit pikey but i used a clear thick bin liner, gaffer tape and scissors :D took about 5 mins and works great.

I've been meaning to do that - as soon as i get my hands on a 32mm socket i'll get onto it. Will a normal digital medical thermometer do the job? :D

I'm also thinking FL models after 2000/2001 or whenever the IRD ratio was changed would have longer lives?

True - i'm 100% sure mine is still original, having had the car from new. At 130000 miles i'm getting a little nervous, since although i can't find any signs of failure or strain on the drivetrain, because of what people here have said / experienced, i'm given to understand it could fail at any...

In retrospect i could have made the distance range options a little better, but this should suffice to get an idea what's going on.

Just curious to see how long various VCU's have lasted :-) - please note when i say failure i mean failure (it was going wrong) rather than it just being changed for peace of mind when the old one might still have been ok.

Finally got around to ordering a radiator to replace my leaky one. Got it from Island 4x4 (Great service, arrived quickly) and it's a Britpart piece (yeah i know about all the Britpart threads on here), anyone got any experience of these? Looks quite nice actually.

If / Once i get a light and get it fitted i will try that bulb combination - sounds good. Presumably green light (LR colour) isn't as good as red?

Thanks for the suggestions - i'm going to try changing the interior light to the 5 door one first, simply because i think it would work best functionally and look reasonably as if it was there originally. I like that rally map light though - might get one anyway :)

DuncanS - good tip thanks - at one point i was looking for single LED lights with a spot focus lens, which i could fit in there - they would shine down directly (green light) onto the centre console like a dim cockpit light - BMW have it built into the rear-view mirror and it looks great...
