i had this problem before on one of my old disco's,it turned out to be the fuel pick up pipe under the sender unit had a tiny hole in it about half way down,so below half a tank it was drawing a small amount of air in hence the rough running,as james martin says remove the sender unit and check...

red diesel is best lol,personally i allways try to use shell,i use there v-power petrol in my subaru impreza and there is a noticable power difference,i use there normal diesel in my 90 and allways seem to get better mpg,dont think the v-power diesel would make much of a difference in the 90...
