Is it worth swapping out my worn 2.25 D for a 2.5 D

What I don't think that anyone has mentioned, is that another effect of direct injection is that the torque "pulse" from each cylinder firing is much sharper than with indirect injection. This, I believe, is why so many people have wrecked their gearboxes using Tdi engines. If you're aware of...

First Rover V8 to Series conversion ?

I did see a video clip of someone making adapter plates for the Perkins Prima in their back yard. Rough as **** and hardly good engineering. Used lots of short lengths of all thread fixed between two thick steel plates. Then they wrapped a piece of steel strip around the outside and MIG welded...

First Rover V8 to Series conversion ?

As early as that. Cool. I suppose that I could always contact firms that actually sold conversion kits and ask for exact dates. I can only think of two, and I think that they're both still in business

First Rover V8 to Series conversion ?

I just wanted to find out if a series vehicle could have been running a V8 40 years ago. Although I bought my first Land Rover around 1984, my memory of when I first noticed a V8 powered example is a bit fuzzy. I don't want to say too much, but let's just say, it's connected to the rules on...

    Lucas "sealed" battery maintenance

663/664 seems to ring a bell. It's certainly a great big bugger. Tomorrow I'll take a good look. I extended my original 2A battery tray to series three diesel size shortly after purchasing the vehicle. I used to consider that Yuasa made the best batteries available, the battery on my...

First Rover V8 to Series conversion ?

Like it says. Can anyone give me the approximate date when the first V8 to series gearbox conversion kits went on sale please ? I'm aware that the U.S. Rover importers had a V8 converted 88 running almost as soon as Rover started building the engine, Golden Rod they called it I think. But...

    Lucas "sealed" battery maintenance

I'm only going to go as far as pulling the filler plugs and topping up the cells as required. If that doesn't do anything I won't be bothering with magic pills or potions. Thinking I'm going to make a small slide hammer at work with a self tapping screw at the business end. Should pull those...

    Lucas "sealed" battery maintenance

Lucas 16ACR Alternator I think, expertly rebuilt by myself using the finest Chinesium diode pack, regulator, and brushes. Don't knock it, it's been 100% reliable for the last five years. Battery is a standard Lucas unit probably intended for tractor use.

Is it worth swapping out my worn 2.25 D for a 2.5 D

Just done that swap. Running a series type timing cover with a chain drive to the cam. Running a 2.25 type injector pump in the traditional position. Runs great. Visually it looks just like a five bearing 2.25 diesel. Only problem is you need the torsional vibration damper type front pulley off...

    Lucas "sealed" battery maintenance

I'm honestly not sure if I'm suffering battery failure or just the consequences of running short journeys with lights, wipers, heater fan all operating most of the time. Fitting a (Smiths) voltage indicator in the very near future, I think that will give me a better understanding of what is...

    Lucas "sealed" battery maintenance

Got a Lucas battery on my 88 Diesel, bought from a local agricultural equipment store. Came with no instructions whatsoever, just a receipt with "2 years guarantee " scrawled on it. Well that was about four years ago, now it's starting to struggle on cold mornings. I'm wondering if I should pop...

Series 3 2.25 Diesel 88" Front Leaf Springs

The council have conveniently installed speed bumps all along the road where I live, maybe 200 yards apart. Plays havoc with series suspension at about 20 -25 mph. But if you speed up to 40mph (30mph speed limit) it actually takes them better. And hopefully keeps my springs from seizing with rust

    12J coolant drain plug

Unfortunately I don't think so. Now if I can find a steel plug with the same thread, I might be able to drill it, then weld a short length of steel tube onto it, followed by a nut or collar with the correct thread for the S3 butterfly tap. Pure bodgery I know, but I'm good at stuff like that.

    12J coolant drain plug

One thing that annoys me on my 12J 2.5 diesel conversion. The cylinder block only has a brass drain plug for the coolant, not the very convenient tap of the S3. Previously, if I needed to change the water pump, I'd run a pipe from the tap to a bucket and hardly waste a drop of coolant. The...

    The Guessing Game

Not something that I recognise. Looks like something made or adapted to hold a cable of some sort. My guess was that it was added to stop the speedometer cable from roasting itself on the exhaust system.

Conversion of an oil bath air filter to run a snorkel

Ditto with my current 88 Diesel. Well not quite. It had had a dummy snorkel fitted to the NS windscreen frame (brackets welded on), and a hole chopped through the NS wing, cunningly cut right across the joint between wing top and wing side, thus ruining both panels. The vendor had removed the...

Conversion of an oil bath air filter to run a snorkel

Many thanks ! I presume that's from the Land Rover optional equipment catalogue I have to say that in all the 40 years that I've been messing around with series land Rovers, I've never actually seen a series factory snorkel kit, either on a vehicle, or on a stall at an autojumble, or even...

Conversion of an oil bath air filter to run a snorkel

I almost got into trouble earlier this morning. Got into a puddle which actually came up to the top of my wheel arches. Another few inches deeper and I might have hydro locked ( ie destroyed) my diesel engine. I've always fancied fitting a snorkel, but the thing that's stopped me has been the...

    2A Horn Push

Actually, I just spotted one of those lurking in my back garden near to the ferret enclosure. Can't remember ever having bought one separately, but probably worth checking out before spending £37

    2A Horn Push

Maybe it's just me. I used to have a thing with cars, whatever make or model I bought, the alternator would fail within a few months. With (series) Land Rovers it's horn buttons and those floor mounted dip switches
