It's a tricky one. If you repair it, you don't know what other damage has been done. Having said that, what a learning curve. You could get a new engine, but again, you don't know the history of it. You pays your money, you takes your choice.

+3. When they make the standard production D1, Defender etc, they're pretty good already. Also, more basic parts are easier to source, mend etc when they go wrong. And they will go wrong, at the worst possible time.

Also, check if the pitting has returned. Might be worth replacing the swivels with undamaged ones while you're at it.

Check for coolant loss. If you're topping up a lot, you've prob got a leak, hence the gurgling as air makes its way round the heater matrix.

My thought would be a bad earth. If one connection has corroded, there's a good chance others are a bit crap too.

+1. I used to be a copper, before having an RTA. Go see the Police. It's the right thing to do. Then afterwards you can 'get mediaeval' in your advice to him.

O the other hand, only one squeak on a D1, you're lucky.

Give the police all the info you can. If he's done it to you, he's probably done something like this before. He must die. Slowly.

Please be careful. My 300tdi ate its own oil and one of the con rods decided to experiment with moving sideways instead of vertically. Made a fist sized hole in the block.

Try rotating the button. It's just possible that its not entirely circular. Mine wasn't, and got it sorted eventually.
