It's a tricky one. If you repair it, you don't know what other damage has been done. Having said that, what a learning curve. You could get a new engine, but again, you don't know the history of it. You pays your money, you takes your choice.
+3. When they make the standard production D1, Defender etc, they're pretty good already. Also, more basic parts are easier to source, mend etc when they go wrong. And they will go wrong, at the worst possible time.

Please be careful. My 300tdi ate its own oil and one of the con rods decided to experiment with moving sideways instead of vertically. Made a fist sized hole in the block.
