If the floor is securely hinged at one end, and securely bolted at the other, and along the length, I can't see a problem. You'd want to be sure it was sealed against water all round, but it's an interesting idea.

If I were you, I'd be taking this chance to build a rot free D1, from the ground up, using good s/h parts etc. Why would you want to fit defender or series panels to it? For a start, the D1 has a 100" wheelbase, not a 90 or 110, so a certain amount of bodging/stretching/mackling would be...
