Sorted the rattling engine cover, replaced the bare metal plates with rear bump-stops, and confirmed that there is an electrical feed to the heated screen, meaning it's the element itself that is knackered. Guess i'll start de-icing it with boiling water then! MW

I had this problem on my old VM diesel rangie, and it was the fuel filter. A Mate had the same on his tdi converted rangie, but worse. Got recovered home after the RAC told him it looked like a dead turbo. In both cases the fuel filter was the cause. I have read about fuel filter problems...
