I have a 1998 2.5 DSE. When you change to low ratio it beeps 3 times and displays a low sign on the dash, the left side of the gear change console illuminates. When you change back to normal, again 3 beeps and the right hand (normal) side of the central console lights up. Hope this helps...

Thanks wammers, but what do you mean by turning over centre? Do you mean take the belt off, connect up the tensioner then somehow turn the engine to work the belt back on ?
