I had the same problem with leaking pipework and my mechanic suggested removing the whole thing which is what he did! Think it was less than £300 and i sold the pump on ebay for £50! Problem solved!

Just make sure basic checks are carried out daily, don't push it too hard on the Autoroute and make sure you have good comprehensive breakdown cover!

You should be able to leave the A/c set on about 20 degs year round, and it should be very cold at 18 degs so you have a problem, maybe a leak which should have showed up when it was re-gassed i believe!
