new brake pads - quick question

Been doing it that way for 35 years+ with no problems. But we didn't have ABS 35 years ago. If you are worried about letting air back into the cylinder put a short length of pipe on to the nipple and hold it vertically with a piece of string around the front spring. The escaping fluid then...

    diff leak 2

May have had the rear up on ramps to fill it otherwise it is difficult to see how it could be over-filled! The pinion shaft is not fitted with the usual lip type seal which provides a psoitive seal against low pressure oilflow, (they do not work against high pressure fluids). Instead a flinger...

    Clacking Freelander

Interpretation of other peoples description of noises is difficult so that is why you may not have received any replies. One thing that causes a lot of clattering noise which isn't often considered is the torsional vibration damper on the auxiliary drive pulley. The outer pulley is bonded to...

    freelander TD4 losing power

my mechanic said that my turbo was not a variable vain one? You definitely need to change mechanics! Two things he has said that the FL hasn't got that it definitley has.

TD 4 noisy fuel pumps, difficult to start !!

Since both fuel pumps are playing up it may well be that the pick up inle inthe fuel tank is partially blocked. It would be worth having a look as it might not be necessary tobuy a new pump. Also, how long since the fuel filter has been changed?

    Spacers n Tyres

The steering lock will be restricted due to the inside of the tyre rubbing on the valence. Also fitting spacers significantly inreases the bearing loads since the line of thrust is outside the bearing centres.

    IRD blanking plate

Most probably is a torsional oscillation in the output drive train. This is superimposed on the normal rotation of the parts. The noise arises when the clearance is crossed and the teeth bang together. Removing the IRD output shaft/pinion reduces the system inertia and raises the oscillating...

    Stcky NSF Brake Caliper

I've never experienced it but I've read of hoses degrading internally Happened to my son,s Transit about a month ago, Had us foxed for a time.

TD4 Under Bonnet Fuel Pump Noise

It could be that either the tank pump is caput or its input is blocked. This would require the under-bonnet pump to suck all the way from the tank causing it to cavitate and make a noise. Sucking in air somewhere along the pipe would also have the same effect so you could check all joints. Cant...

    LOUD banging noise!!

As there is positive damage to the crown wheel and pinion in the IRD, definitely drain the oil to remove all the debris, otherwise this will be circulated through the other gears and bearings and you will need a total rebuild.

    LOUD banging noise!!

Drain the oil from the IRD and look for debris. The oil should be relatively clean. Flakes of metal indicate surface damage to the gear teeth while large pieces shoe total tooth fracture. It is usually the crown wheel and pinion of the drive to the prop shaft which break down.

    New VCU

It is however possible to press fresh silicone into the unit with a grease gun, diluting the old gel. But as there also should be an amout of air in it this is the hard part. The fluid used in VCUs has a positive coefficient of viscosity, i.e its viscosity incresaes with temperatue. This is...

    front drive shafts??

Its not good practice to swap sides with drive shafts. As the majority of loading comes in foorward motion, especially during acceleration the shafts become "wound up". Moving them to the other side effectively changes the direction of the maximum stress, causing a large increase in the range of...

    Vibration/Humming OS Rear

Could be the needle roller bearings in the rear prop shaft joint. If they wear the shaft does not run central and causes vibration. Also check the UJ bolts.

black smoke after egr blanking mod

Dont see why the fuel filter should cause excessive smoke. It will restrict fuel flow, but should not have any effect on performance until pressure falls so low that the low pressure sensor prevents the engine starting. This is because in a common rail engine the high pressure fuel pump delivers...

    Wishbone bush housing

Read the manual as to how to reassemble the wishbone. If its not done properly the suspension will squeak. Took our local dealer three visits to fix it, even though there is a very clear service iinsrstruction notice about it. I found it in Rave and printed it to show them what the problem was...

    Major Malfunction! Dangerous! Advice?

Firstly, the oil level could rise under very high vacuum conditions, but to flow properley would require it to be replaced with something and that means a breech in the crackcase. Also, for the turbo to apply full suction the air intack must become completely blocked, and that would stall the...

    Major Malfunction! Dangerous! Advice?

I think I agree with Chaser's diagnosis. All probably caused by the crankcase "breather"! This is supposed to be a 'depression limiter' and if its blocked the full turbo suction pressure is applied to the crankcase. We have seen pictures on here recently of what happens if you remove the...

    "Mondo" mode rattle.

Recently removed rear prop shaft as a bearing is noisy. Did you mean just the rear section of the prop shaft? If so you left the inertia of the VCU floating at the end of the first part of the shaft. This then forms a torsionally vibrating system which will resonate as you pass through critical...

    Trip recorder resetting itself

Battery terminals are well maintained, including eathing points. The total milage indicator doesn't reset so I cant sell it with 'low milage'! I wondered if it was the type of memory used? I heard the trick with car radios was to put them in the freezer to zero the identification code.
