Old Irish Wolf I sorted mine today.I usually remove complete drive train, props and vcu.I had it on for the past few weex because of the snow and ice.The grating sound I had in mondo disappeared ,but because my diff is leaking i had to disconnect asap.So this time I just removed the rear...

rattle type of noise when reversing?

More informative to drain the IRD and check for wear debris. Oil should be clean and no black/silver bits in it. Can inspect the hypoid gear which is the most likely part to fail by removeing the pinion housing.

Automatic gear box knackered - advice :)

The reason why the fluid level must be checked between 35-45 deg. C is because of entrained air caused by the thrashing the oil receives in the torque convertor. The bubbles make a significant difference to the perceived volume of the oil. Also since for air V2= V1*T2/T1 the volume of the air...

    Td4..non starter, part 2

Followed Saga No. 1 and thought it sounded like the battery. If you have fitted a new one and it has re-appeared could be that the alternator is not delivering sufficient charge.

If the brake has been disassembled to fix the pivot then its probably the cable that is the problem.

    Td4 Brakes . Help !!!

Had this problem with mine. Turned out to be the hairpin springs holding the shoes on to the back plate were far too tight and were preventing the shoes from sliding, in fact one shoes hadn't moved at all and was in as-new condition after 35k. Cleaned and sparingly greased the lands where the...

    Is this a turbo problem?

Sounds as though you may have a split in one of the hoses or a clip is loose and theris a leak, usually at one of the elbows. Another place to look is the cross pipe near to the dipstick where it reats on the head of a screw which wears a hole in it.

Even if the bell housing fits, the gear pair between the box and yhe IRD are not the same so they will not mesh.

    td4 cold weather

Seeing that diesels cant flood I interpret your meaning as hesitant/rough running. Smoke means that there is unburnt fuel. A possible cause is a poor spray pattern at the low pressures generated at start-up together with injector fouling. Try a dose of injector cleaner, Millers etc.

Possible high pressure pump leak - 2003 2.0TD4?

Not many places the HP pump can leak from. Check the LP fuel feed and return pipes at the HP pump, which you can see. These are rubber elbows retained by jubilee clips. Check both ends. There is an O ring at the face seal between the pressure regulator and the HP pump which may have failed.

Do you use the clutch to slow you down?

I find HDC absolutely perfect. Bottom gear, feet off all pedals and let the computer do its stuff. Goes very slowly, (feels too slow), no need for pressing the clutch. Gets down safely in one piece. Read the Warning in the owners manual. "Do not depress the clutch....HDC will no longer function".

possibly stiffed by previous owner, locking wheel nuts!?!

Irwin do a set of 'nut extractors' made for removing nuts which have been rounded which work on the same principle as a stud extractor. Available from Machine Mart and Screwfix.

please help knocking on the front end of my 53 plate td4

If you have had to replace the diff it is symptomatic of a VCU which is either seized or at least has a very high resistance to slipping. This causes the transmission to the rear wheels to be heavily loaded by 'wind-up' when cornering, causing.damage to both the front and rear hypoid gears. The...

Will it start, wont it start?

There have been several reports of poor starting being down to the ignition switch and from the symptons this sounds like a possibility. Could also be the solenoid contacts. The question of the battery would soon be answered by a load test and your local garage might oblige as they will think a...

    4 wheels spinning

Panic not. Sounds as thought your traction control is working properly. When a wheel spins, because of the differential, this allows all the drive on that axle to pass to that wheel, so that the stationary wheel cannot drive. The traction control system detects this and applies the brake to stop...

    Seized injector

I managed to release mine by oscillating it within the clearance of the retaining studs using a hammer and aluminium drift on the flange 'ears'. I could not remove the studs as the minimal torque head extension sheared off. However tapping it back and forth eventually freed it suficiently to...
