    updated crankcase breather

You only need the cyclone bit, part no. .....367, which separates the oil fron the gases going to the inlet manifold and returns it to the sump. The unit also contains the depression limiting valve which, if it is working correctly you do not need to replace. The O ring seals the cylone to the...

How's best to check my engine mounts?

Start by checking the lower steady which is connected to the IRD. Use a pice of wood (2x2x30in)as a lever since it does less damage than a crowbar and a further piece to spread the load on to the body to prevent local bending. You will see play in the bushes if there is any significant wear.

    Still not right TD4(55)!!!

If the VCU fails by stiffening up, this causes high loads in the IRD and differential hypoid gears (because of transmission wind-up). If these fail then debris can enter the bearings or be entrapped between other gears in the IRD. Bearing failure is typified by a droning noise. If debris is...

    updated crankcase breather

The new cyclone separator is part of the crankcase depression limiter and is BMW part no. 11 127 799 367 (for BMW M47 engine). It comes with new gaskets. They cost ~£18 + from BMW dealers. They do not need replacing, perhaps just an occasional paraffin wash. It is located on the cylinder head...

    License plate bulbs not working?

Just solder a piece of wire in parallel with the pcb track. Car designers dont realise that PCB tracks aren't meant for heavy currents unless they are made much wider. The alarm pcb on my Disco caused no end of pain because of this.

    Duff brakes - still!

Braking efficiency with a drum brake should be as good if not better than discs due to a larger braking area. Not so. Disc brakes can dissipate heat much better than drum brakes because the heat does not have to be conducted through the drum. Brake fade was a common problem before discs came...

tailgate mech cables or complete lot

hi, just replaced my tailgate cables but think the motor may be broken. When I press the button to drop the window the motor winds it all the way down and wont stop. When I press the button to raise the window nothing at all happens. Does this sound like a motor fault or electrical? cheers...

    Freelander goes clunk clunk clunk!

Clunk, clunk, clunk sounds as though it might be a prop shaft frequency rather than diff bushes which are more likely to occur on drive take-up. As you surmise the problem is your diff or IRD caused by over-stiff VCU. Doing th VCU test will show how stiff it is. You can only see the diff gears...

    Fuel leak?

Have you changed the crankcase breather lately? If not it could be due to crankcase pressure building up. If you do need to change it use the replacement BMW cyclonic type, part no. 11 127 779 367 from BMW, not L/R.

    Tyre pressure

Book says they should be 215/60s, you are effectively running with a higher gear. Also says 30psi all round, any load condition.

Obviously a lot easier to replace the whole unit, but at what ££££? Saw kit in Ebay 2-3 days ago using stainless wires and crimped fasteners for £19.95, together with full fitting instructions. Not difficult if you take your time.

    ABS and TC Problems

Quote: So i disconnected the ABS Unit and the noise stopped So probably not in the ABS unit itself. Check all connections and wires in the sensor inputs. Older foot brake switches have a known problem but cant see how this would trigger continuos operation which appears to be your problem.

    Help! Freelander TD4 starting problems

Quote: I insisted on find the way to have the glow plugs operating everytime I'm trying to start the engine (not only when it's cold) LR were right, it cannot be done without reprogramming the ECU. It uses signals from the coolant temperature sensor to activate the glow plug relay. The glow...

    The dreaded "Rear Window" fault..

Quote: I'm guessing that the winding mechanism is on the wrong way round. Dont think the cables can be put in the wrong way around. I think Hippo has posted a picture of the assembly opened up. There are no limit switches on the assembly. The window position is calculated from feedback from...

    Duff brakes - still!

Quote: but do seem good when coming down from high speed. This would suggest you have a leak in the vacuum/servo sytem. At high speed the vac pump would be working hard and maintaining a depression in the system. At low speed the leak is more than the pump can handle. Check the vac pipes and...
