    Trip recorder resetting itself

Anyone else experienced this? It has happened three times over the last cold spell. After a very cold night the recorder has been reset on startup. Honestly I haven't touched the reset button, anyway it has to be held for 3 secs before it resets and even after a good night before I think I would...

    scarey freelander

Locking one wheel on an axle effectively doubles the speed of the other side. giving a double whammy effect which must be scarey. My son had a similar problem on his Disco, the CV joint was shot. Check the gaiter to see if it is still intact, if not that is a good indicator. Bearing steels rust...

    Insulating boot storage from condensation

Not quite so direct as Chaser but I agree with his sentiments. Warming air means that the water vapour pressure can be higher and that it can hold more water, BUT where does the water come from? There is very poor circulation into the cubby because of the sealing by the carpets, so air isn't...

Rough idle & clicking rear offside wheelarch.

The disc under the rear seat covers the tank connections and fuel gauge sender. The pump has been moved outside the passenger space to underneath the car, just inboard of the rear wheel. Best way to access it is to remove the rear wheel and pull out the front of the wheel arch liner. The pump...

    egr valve

With regards to crankcase breather, is this the same as cyclone breather on turbo? The BMW replacement for the breather "filter" is a cyclone separator. It fits into the same casing on top of the engine as the LR version. LR have now specified a filter change every 12k miles but still use the...

    egr valve

The round 'silver thing' is the EGR valve. Sounds as though the hose clip on the manifold inlet is loose. This is letting the oily air, which has been through the EGR, escape thus reducing the charge into the engine so it will feel sluggish. As there is so much oil about it also sounds as...

    Which side ???

Nathan, offside is always offside and nearside is always nearside... the kerb that is But the nearside becomes the off side when I cross the channel or dont you bother!

    Which side ???

Somewhere in Rave it says 'sat in the vehicle looking forward' 'Near or off' is not a good idea, confusing with LHD as its wrong.

    clonking when turning

Your description says that it only happens once each time you change from one direction to the other, i.e. as the sideways thrust changes direction. this would suggest that the bushes for the Panhard rods may be the problem. CV joints make more of a clicking sound on tight turns, especially...

no hand brake and pulls right

If your handbrake pulls tight in less than 5/6 clicks the shoes dont need adjusting. The problem will be as Janson2 says, the oilseal on the back of the transfer box. If you replace it yourself make sure you push it in down to the shoulder or it will rub on the drive flange and you will need to...

    Worn tyres

The rolling radius of the rear tyres is always larger than the front because of the front/rear weight distribution. On mine, TD4 ESP with Latitudes, the difference is 10mm. This makes radius differences due to wear rather less significant. Putting new tyres on the rear increases the difference...

    Td4 mpg

Low temperatures make a significant difference to fuel consumption, especially so if you do short journeys. Starting at lower temperatures requires more energy to be put into the engine and other mechanical part to raise them to the working level. Oil viscosity increases with cold (even though...

    Is it me...or..

in fact last winter was massively embarrassed to be unable to drive in a straight line without skidding everywhere while Fiestas and the like pootled past me!! Find this hard to believe. How heavy is your right shoe? Just coax it rather than hoof it.

    Condensation

Early Freelanders had a problem because of blockage of flow to the vents in the rear of the car. A service note was issued showing how to modify (cut a hole in it) the polystyrene block behind the LH boot liner. Sorry I cant remember the exact details but it has been reported in the threads.

    rattle from engine!possilbly timing chain?

Could be the rubber/bonding of the crankshaft pulley has broken. In the right area and lets the pulley bang around. Check for cracks in the rubber. There has been a thread on it earlier.

    IRD / VCU Query

What I want to know is could there still be an issue with the IRD?, if it was knackered would I still get some indication even in Mondo mode? Depends upon the degree of damage. The bangs may well have been teeth shearing off the crown wheel in the IRD. Drain the IRD oil and look for debris...

    VCU, IRD, what the...?!

Due to load diffierence between the front and rear axles the tyres have a different rolling radius. On mine, new tyres all round, this is approximately 3% (31cm front/32cm rear), causing the front wheels to rotate faster than the rear. Can anyone quote the true gear ratio between the front and...

    crankcase breather

To MHM I dont think you will be able to fit it to a KV6 as it bolts down to a special face on the cylinder head which ports to allow breathing and oilflow back to the sump.

    crankcase breather

Best to replace the whole lot with the centrfugal separator as now used by BMW. This will not get blocked as does the "filter". Unfortunately BMW do not sell just the plastic centrifuge, you have to buy the whole lot, £37 when I last changed mine, but you do get new gaskets and nuts.

    Instrument cluster lights

In total agreement, the instrument lighting is inadequate. The choice of colours is poor, grey/green lettering on a black background, more contrast is needed. I find it impossible to read any data when driving into the sun, even with the visor down (and I have reasonable eyesight). I wonder who...
