By what you say, it seems the issue is when the engine has reached operating temperature. I've had similar problems down to loose fitting intercooler pipes from turbo/manifold. I guess your temp is oki etc?

Seems to have been the case Shifty, recovery gave me a bump and she ran with no further issues but the starter's knackered so will swap it out for another tonight. Any idea why it would jam on though?

It was burning, the smell is quite distinct. Any way to by pass anything to get it going again? I got spare starter at home, I'm just a mile away :(

With a disco chassis, engine & gearbox and only vitara bodywork, how the hell did he register it as a Vitara?? I reackon if i took the body panels off mine, fitted an old motorcylce seat and took 2 wheels off, i could register it as a Honda 90 cub....
