P38 2.5 DHSE Engine noise and oil light

Getting the head off the old car to see what its like, but I ****ted about all afternoon trying to release the top timing chain pressure, got the right tools but just don't seem to get it pulled over enough to get the pin located to hold the tensioner in. Cannot see anything wrong, even tried a...

P38 2.5 DHSE Engine noise and oil light

Fitted my standby rad yesterday, its an original but the fins are pretty bad, anyway took it into the garage to have the exhaust fume test done on the water, it came up positive pretty quickly at high rpm, they said its not always 100% but usually is! I have got an engine in a junker same type...

P38 2.5 DHSE Engine noise and oil light

Shize day, radiator split all had been fine until this, it was a Britpart about 2 years old. Cannot help wondering if its the new head gasket leaking as the pump is new, cap was new with the last rad, new thermostat, new fan, the AA guy had his thermometer on all engine points and all looks to...

Oh for a Moggy 1000 with an"A" series engine

Dad had a Traveller and he convinced us that the back luggage space area was a proper seat and the blanket on the floor was luxury, still the family of six went all over the country on the annual holliday, I remember Mum slapping him when he got on the M1 and hit 60 miles an hour! I learnt to...

P38 2.5 DHSE Engine noise and oil light

Agreed by me great help. Getting a new engine oil filter tomorrow to change the oil as I had to grind the head off two cylinder head bolts and even though I tucked rags in everywhere I would rather spend a bit more on flushing it out. Just remembered the hot start kit that I found tucked in the...

Guess what, schoolboy error, yep nipped the wire from No 4, luckily not broken , repaired the insulation and it seems to be working properly now, the light goes out on start up. Changed the transmission cooler hoses as well today as they were on there last legs. Thanks guys good call.

P38 2.5 DHSE Engine noise and oil light

Last parts on today and it started almost as soon as I could tighten the injector pipes while bleeding the air out. Seems to run much better than just before. Just given it a quick 10 mile test to check for leaks and besides a radiator hose clamp to adjust or replace its looking good except for...

Defender 90 with Led lights not working trailer with old bulbs

Hi, A friend moved my trailer for me the other day, he said we cannot plug the lights in as he has all LED lights and he says the trailer lights will all go cranky! I have heard about the indicator issue with standard set up and LED trailer lights but as this is the other way around I wondered...

P38 2.5 DHSE Engine noise and oil light

After a wait for the crank sprocket and then I forgot to order a pump woodruff key (On close inspection it was twisted over and the keyway in the sprocket was worn) anyway started to get it back together, the cam setting tool was sloppy so super glued brass shim either side to get a good fit...

Cheers Wammers I was thinking of doing that instead of cutting the gasket but wont do that now.

P38 2.5 DHSE Engine noise and oil light

Crank sprocket indeed difficult to find but BMW say they have one but it will be a few days before it arrives the other two were easier to get hold of. Just checking the O ring seal that goes on the steel water pipe that fits in the front cover and noticed the water pump was now seized solid, it...

Hylomar, that's good, got some of that. I will have new chains and guides on old sprockets, what do you think on timing, still use the plus 20K miles feelers under the cam tool and the 0.90 static setting for the pump. Hopefully parts arriving tomorrow.

P38 2.5 DHSE Engine noise and oil light

Put the dial gauge on the piston top and found TDC and put the pin in and seems spot on, maybe I had the wrong position after all (**** hey), waiting for parts quote now. Spent a few hours running taps in the blind holes to clean the crap out. The old gaskets had a thin layer of sealer applied...

P38 2.5 DHSE Engine noise and oil light

TDC pin is 7.88 and 11.59 dia. It was in a kit from Paddock. The turbo seems to be ok on movement of the spindle up and down and end float. looking at the hoses it looks like the same amount of oil was going in the air side as coming out the other side, I have yet to dismantle the valve cover...

P38 2.5 DHSE Engine noise and oil light

Head and block cleaned up and both look ok with no signs of cracks or warping. Front timing cover removed, timing chains and gears off, the woodruff key was sheared on the half that drives the pulleys, hopefully I will pick the new key up tomorrow to see how good a fit it is in the crank. My TDC...

    Best engine component degreaser solvent

CTC,carbon tetrachloride Was that the stuff in the old Pyrene brass extinguishers as I remember people used them to get dabs of grease of clothes, probably all empty if there actually was a fire!

    Best engine component degreaser solvent

I have a load of engine parts from my P38 diesel to clean, the worst is the plastic inlet manifold which has a good coating of thick sticky black gunge, just wondered if anyone has recommendations for a good degreaser or solvent to use as its difficult to get brushes right in to all the spaces...

P38 2.5 DHSE Engine noise and oil light

Nightmare of a day, two cylinder head bolts were rusted in the block and the heads sheared off, took all day to get them out last thing I needed. Tried mig welding a nut on the top but it just kept breaking so cut through the heads with a slitting disc a few times and chiselled the rest off...
