I agree. Was a first for me too. I got a surprise when I found a thermostat in the housing expecting it to be missing. Still after 19 years and 185k miles it was allowed to retire. This car never fails to surprise me.

The original? Behr Thompson thermostat in my 1996 P38 diesel failed partly open and gave exactly the same symtoms.

Run 28psi F 34psi R light load. On the DSE. Seems to be best compromise.

Changed out the original? possibly 19 year old Behr- Thompson thermostat on the old diesel. It had failed "safe". Much faster and smoother warm up now.

Just had the same problem of locks cycling and tailgate release not working on my 2.5 DSE. Its been a nice day today so had sunroof open. ( re: problems on warm days). Opened and closed sunroof again and all back to normal. Sunroof not latched fully?? Fingers crossed.
