Cheapest option is find another 2.3 diesel and fit that, straight swap. Tdi conversion is more involved, MAY affect your insurance premium also as its now a modified vehicle - you ought also to think about brake upgrades if you go down that route. Depends how fussed you are about originality...

You need to buy a dating letter from Gaydon - google Gaydon motor heritage and it should get you there. What date was it registered in 1973? The vehicle needs to be built before 31/12/1972 to qualify as Tax Exempt. If it is not currently registered as Tax exempt then I would say I doubt it...

You can change the engine, box and convert to discs and keep the identity (just). Not my cup of tea personally (you can probably easily buy a vehicle already to that spec) at least you are thinking of brake upgrades which a lot of folks overlook - just remember you are still limited to 2 tons...

You can change any one item other than the chassis - that must be to the original spec. You can't change the suspension as it would involve modifying the chassis. There is no problem (legally) with a transmission change, although my personal opinion is that if a Tdi and 5 speed box are so...

I'd broadly agree although most 2.25 diesels I have encountered are more like 25-26 than 20. And it would be a damn good six pot getting 15.

Anything BUILT before 31-12-1972 is tax exempt. The registration date may be later. Be aware a lot of Land-Rovers out there are floating about on IDs that do not belong to the vehicle, sadly this seems especially true of lightweights, afterall only a tiny fraction of the production span would be...
