    1969 swb series 2a resto

Nice motor that, I saw the photos in the gallery a few days ago. I have the same winch set up on my 109 so any questions, let me know. You can't convert it to coil springs (and why the heck would you anyway) and keep the ID - so don't bother. Its an old Land-Rover, not a sports car... Glad to...

    Simple advice for a newbie

Cheapest option is find another 2.3 diesel and fit that, straight swap. Tdi conversion is more involved, MAY affect your insurance premium also as its now a modified vehicle - you ought also to think about brake upgrades if you go down that route. Depends how fussed you are about originality...

Found a seires 3 but is it road tax free

You need to buy a dating letter from Gaydon - google Gaydon motor heritage and it should get you there. What date was it registered in 1973? The vehicle needs to be built before 31/12/1972 to qualify as Tax Exempt. If it is not currently registered as Tax exempt then I would say I doubt it...

    Defender speedo in Series III?

Totally different ratios anyway so wouldn't have told you how fast you were going even if it did fit.

What happens to all those original engines...

They tend to get weighed in. Tried getting a six cylinder petrol recently? You couldn't give one away ten years ago...

    tax free status

You can change the engine, box and convert to discs and keep the identity (just). Not my cup of tea personally (you can probably easily buy a vehicle already to that spec) at least you are thinking of brake upgrades which a lot of folks overlook - just remember you are still limited to 2 tons...

My new series II2 a non runner?

The thing to keep in mind is that a lot of changes occurred in 1967. The Series II had broadly three incarnations, the original series IIs, the early IIAs, and the later IIAs. The 1967 changes brought about the black dashboard, long handbrake lever, single wiper motor, negative earth electrical...

My new series II2 a non runner?

Could be, its definitely a later bulkhead due to the demister vent panel.

2.6 noise levels, mpg and top speeds?

Ah but changing the diffs from 4.7:1 to 3.54:1 is cheating! And not an option for people with ENV axles or desires for originality ;)

    The Sandringham Six

Oh right. I'll take it you are aware of the registration implications then.

Failed attempt to buy a series

If that dark blue paint is original (looking at the inside of the cab it isn't) I would have said RAF, but to be honest the 88 registration date makes me think breakdown truck, as they were only required to have their own registration numbers from 1988. Prior to that they had run on trade...

    1963 Series 2a - project

Looks in similar condition to our 66 swb. Have fun!

    The Sandringham Six

Quite the rarity! Are the lower photos the same vehicle, as it seems to have morphed into a 110? Would be shame to have to Q plate it...

    Tax exempt

You can change any one item other than the chassis - that must be to the original spec. You can't change the suspension as it would involve modifying the chassis. There is no problem (legally) with a transmission change, although my personal opinion is that if a Tdi and 5 speed box are so...

2.6 noise levels, mpg and top speeds?

I'd broadly agree although most 2.25 diesels I have encountered are more like 25-26 than 20. And it would be a damn good six pot getting 15.
  16. 22900013a

2.6 noise levels, mpg and top speeds?

Oh it does, but not often, and not very quickly! ;)
  17. 22900013a

2.6 noise levels, mpg and top speeds?

Nope, I own the oldest 1-Ton 109", its not going anywhere!! ;)
  18. 22900013a

    Tax exempt

Anything BUILT before 31-12-1972 is tax exempt. The registration date may be later. Be aware a lot of Land-Rovers out there are floating about on IDs that do not belong to the vehicle, sadly this seems especially true of lightweights, afterall only a tiny fraction of the production span would be...

    Series pic's

I know of one surviving EMEB 1-Ton, its on my website along with photos of some others that do not seem to be with us any longer. The surviving one has Salisbury axles IIRC, its certainly from the right time, being a 1973/4 series III. I know they were fairly common in enthusiast circles at one...

2.6 noise levels, mpg and top speeds?

Please feel free to come tune mine, nobody I know has been able to get it to give more then 13mpg...! :)
