    Series 3 1970

Probably a late IIA with lamps in the wings, often "muppets" mistake them for series IIIs. I do know of a couple of very, very early IIIs given J plates when being registered for the first time many years after being built, as they will give the earliest possible reg number which would be a J...

    How fast is you Landy?

My IIA 1-Ton will do about 65 flat out and absolutely screaming - no fun at all on 900x16s and with such low gearing. Been a long time since I had anything like that kind of speed out of it. Its normal cruise is about 40-45 depending how flush I am feeling for petrol money (it does only get 12...

    Finding out the original specification

The 3/4 tilt would have fitting on the body capping just behind the truck cab, but a full tilt wouldn't. A plain truck cab probably wouldn't either, but may well have had fittings on the back end. It could also have been a hardtop with a split rear door. My factory hardtop has the U shaped...

When the new defender comes out will you hang on to your old one?

I'll be keeping my 110 thanks. Whilst i do agree the Defender needs a big update, I don't feel the DC100 is the right direction to take. I accept it will probably sell in big numbers, and might, just might do everything the current Defender does, but from my point of view the styling is just too...

    Finding out the original specification

There is no way to know exactly what it was built as unless you find the build card - these went out with the vehicle, often hidden behind the dash or centre windscreen strip. Sometimes they were shoved in the tub reinforcing strips under the rear floor. Usually they have long since rotted away...

series 2 1960 wings only have one hole!!!!!!!!

Land-Rover did not fit indicators as standard until the mid 1960s - it was an optional fitment before then and not a legal requirement. As built, all IIs and IIAs would have only one hole in the wing front. Even when the indicators were fitted at the factory they had to drill the extra hole. In...

    Series 3 Body Job!

Door mounts were an option I think, but with a metal arm and clamp with a rounded lens with rubber edge. I have wing mirrors on my IIA and they are fine.

    Series 3 Body Job!

They would be wing mounted on a 71 vehicle, with either round or rectangular lenses.

    Series 3 Body Job!

Yes, they were body colour until 1982 at which point they became silver grey on 4-cylinder models. There were no six cylinders anymore by this time, just four or eight. I'm not sure what year your vehicle is as I can't tell from the reg plate. The Defender style mirrors also came in in 1982 but...

    Series 3 Body Job!

Nice transformation. The only things that stand out are that the rear lights are upside down (indicator goes above stop/tail) and 88"s never had black headlamp surrounds, only 109" V8s. Looks a quality job otherwise, well done.

Found a seires 3 but is it road tax free

If it has that level of info it must be a factory registered vehicle - usually all you get is line number, colour, build date, and where it was dispatched to - I should know, I have read the microfiches enough times myself. ;) Even the factory reg book usually only adds details like engine...

Found a seires 3 but is it road tax free

That certainly doesn't apply to anything Land-Rover ever built. A vehicle built on Jan 1st 1973 would have to pay tax, one built on or before 31/12/1972 would not - FACT.

Can i fit an overdrive and a hydrolic pump

With a penalty on acceleration however.

Found a seires 3 but is it road tax free

Nobody said what was going to cost £40 so I presumed the Land-Rover. March 73 registration may have a build date prior to 31/12/72, but it would depend on the model really - bog standard 88 I doubt it as they were making hundreds a week and selling them quick. Just do the enquiry with Gaydon...

Found a seires 3 but is it road tax free

If its only going to cost £40 to buy I expect it will need hundreds if not thousands spending to get it sorted, unless you are getting an absolute bargain. Most rebuilds have an extra zero on the end. When you factor in road tax it doesn't really add up to much. If you really really must have a...

Winch stuck no drum release handle any ideas?

The release mechanism on these hydraulic winches does seize up, mine does (I still have the handle attached and it doesn't help) but you can still use the winch fine, you just have to pay it out under power rather then free spool it. All I can suggest you do is soak it in diesel/oil or...

Can i fit an overdrive and a hydrolic pump

Range Rover diffs will mean you lose lower gearing for off-road, as it raises your gearing all the time. To be honest I wouldn't worry too much, you aren't going to gain much speed no matter what you do.

And no way will that hydraulic tank ground out, its well up out of the way.

    1969 swb series 2a resto

Oh and the front crossmember should have rivnuts in to hold the winch mounting plate - if you put bolts right through they will crush the front x-member when you tighten it up.
