Had a similar problem with the electrics in the tailgate of my old ford galaxy which I traced to a broken wire and as your symptoms seem to be more or less the same as I was experiecing then, a broken wire in the flexi joint into the door would be the obvious culprit.

yeah i'm thinking that. had a good look with a torch this morning and can't see any chafed wires or obvious damage. Checked all the parking sensors and they seem to be working normally now, EAS still behaving itself and warning message still not appearing, so it's looking promising. Wheel brace...

Just had a look on Rave and if we're talking about the hole in the floor under the flap that goes into the little recess on the right hand side of the boot, then I'm right it is for the detachable towbar. if you've got the handbook then there's a pic on page 153

I'm pretty sure one of the holes under the floor of my Vogue is for the detachable tow bar, i think the tow ball comes with a fibre casing which fits into the hole in the boot floor.
