Yup. The L series appears to be a pretty strong engine if cared for, but not as economical, or torquey as the TD4, although there are tuners out there who will change that for a few quid. I got the wife to buy the TD4, but I have owned a Rover 75 with the BMW M47 in it for four years and...

If budget is an issue get a low torque type, 0 - 35 for example. It's far harder to guesstimate the low torque settings compared to the high torque settings. Also, high torque settings tend to be big fat bolts, big fat bolts are much harder to break than the the little ones :) The other way...

If it's not the above, have you checked the relay for the aircon? Relays can weld themselves closed, not often, but I've seen it happen.

How much do you want to spend? This lot know a bit about gearbox design and modification :)
