    I've had that happen, let the pads wear too thin and pistons tend to stick in the caliper, once new pads are in no more binding after, freeing the pistons that is.

    I'd have to do some research but, one reason is, after 2000 the tax bands get more expensive and, as I'm a fan of V8s it would be cheaper.

    So did I once, an LS400 they were cheap but, in the last couple of years prices have gone silly and, I was put off with it having a cam belt instead of a timing chain.

    When I did the cam belt on my old Astra, the idler pulley bolts were 25NM M8 into iron block, if it helps.

    If it was me I would cut the access door, all the info is in the technical archive, should have been done from the factory IMO, easy enough to make the piece cut out a bit bigger and, make a rubber gasket and secure with self tappers.

    A woodwork vice would be safer, clamp it lightly and heat with a heatgun, clamping tighter as it softens, protect it from marking with two pieces of silicone like soldering mat material, then leave it clamped until it cools completely, just an idea.
