    Series 3 Parabolic Problems

OK - a bit more to report here. I got hold of GME. They were very quick to respond, but told me to go through Paddocks. So - I hung out for a reply from Paddocks. A day or two later I got an email asking for my front axle serial number. So I sent that. Next day I got an email saying that...

Defender Brake Pedal box in a 2a/3 ?

Sorry - Bit of misinformation back there. My rims are 5.5", not 6.5" as previously stated. I think with 6.5" you'd be outside the wings.

Defender Brake Pedal box in a 2a/3 ?

Hmm - I see what you mean. I compared the Heystee casting with my old Series ones which I have yet to throw away. You have a point - Opening the drain plug fully may still allow 2-3 mm of undrained space at the very bottom. I (not by design I can assure you) may have solved this problem by...

Defender Brake Pedal box in a 2a/3 ?

Front track is 1555 to the outside of the tread. My rear (identical tyres but ENV axle - not sure if that makes a difference) is 1520. Front is still nicely inside the width of the front bumper which on mine measures 1620. The drain plug on the new swivel housings is right at the bottom -...

Defender Brake Pedal box in a 2a/3 ?

Not too bad - I guess it depends what you are used to. My other car is a VW Kombi........

Defender Brake Pedal box in a 2a/3 ?

    Yes - Heystee setup.

Defender Brake Pedal box in a 2a/3 ?

Here it is before it went onto the bulkhead. It all fitted OK, but in its original position the vacuum takeoff fouled the reservoir. It needs turning around to clear it. Apart from that it was all pretty straightforward.

Defender Brake Pedal box in a 2a/3 ?

I fitted the Defender master cylinder to the S3 pedal/servo setup and it works a treat. Dual circuit plus everything downstairs fits like it should.

    Series Gearbox Selector Seals Leaking

I used two thin double lipped seals on the front end of each shaft. These are much better than O rings. They make the selection a little tighter but not too bad. I cut up some 5/16" fuel line to make the two side seals and packed the springs with grease before reassembling. Been pretty good...

    Series 3 Parabolic Problems

Ah - ha! Now we're talking. Yes - I remember that now from when I put it all together and look back at the photos. Yep - that lug is definitely located inside the corresponding 'socket' on the bottom of the axle. This is the kind of advice that I was looking for - So - sliding the axle...

That's a first class idea - I'll dig out an address. Cheers Andrew

    Series 3 Parabolic Problems

Hi All Tottot is correct - I have given this a lot of thought - but necessarily so in my view. Things are clearly amiss at present. I cranked up a decent push down on the front of the chassis last night and can confirm that no amount of loading is going to correct the mismatch such that the...

    Series 3 Parabolic Problems

Yep - I will try that before I dismantle everything. Might gain a few mm. My basement workshop has a concrete roof so a couple of jacks on top of the dumb irons may have to do instead of the fat mates! Thanks

    Series 3 Parabolic Problems

Wondering whether the simple answer to this is: 1) Remove front axle/spring assembly. 2) Separate axle from springs. 3) Remove U bolts and take off the bottom spring plate. 4) Redrill the locator hole about 30 mm back. 5) Weld up the old hole. 6) Reassemble. This will have the effect of moving...

    Series 3 Parabolic Problems

Megaman - I had a minor panic when I read your first post and rushed down to the workshop to measure the springs front and rear....! I have had another good look at the front setup. It all looks fine. The shackles are more or less vertical with the current loading (missing the front wings and...

    Series 3 Parabolic Problems

Here are a couple of photos of the situation. I am pretty certain that the front springs are symmetrical. It is 440 mm from the centre of the front spring hanger bolt to the middle of the axle, and 440 mm from the middle of the axle to the rear spring hanger bolt. If it looks like the axle...

    Series 3 Parabolic Problems

Hi guys. Thanks for your input. Bit more detail: Engine and gearbox/transfer case are in. Shocks are on. Battery is in. Bulkhead is on. Fuel tanks and exhaust are on. So there’s a bit of mass there. I guess at the risk of overthinking it, the most disturbing thing I can see is that the...

    Series 3 Parabolic Problems

I'm up to rolling chassis stage in my SWB S3 restoration. I have got GME parabolics mounted front and rear. Standard Rover diff at front. ENV diff at rear. Standard 2.25 engine and box. When I bought it, the car had been a farm wagon for about 20 years and had been severely abused. Lots of...

Series 3 Transfer Case - Intermediate Shaft Endfloat

Hey thanks guys. I'll rub down the back of the thrust washers on some emery/glass and see if I can get 4 thou with the shim in. Cheers Andrew
