    Freelander 1 2004 TD4 IRD/VCU

Tyres are all same make and model, all same size, all inflated to 2.1 bar, slightly less worn on the rear. I'll monitor the VCU. I'm doing around 1000km a month, should a OWUT once a month be OK?

    Freelander 1 2004 TD4 IRD/VCU

I did the test 5 or 6 times and all the results were 50 to 52 seconds averaging 51. Likewise, other opinions would be interesting!!

    Freelander 1 2004 TD4 IRD/VCU

Following on from my previous posts regarding my IRD, I have the car back now and all appears to be OK. With regards to the VCU, there is no binding reversing on full lock and a OWUT today using the suggested methods gave a time of 51 seconds. The car had not been driven for 24 hours or so and...

    2004 TD4 transmission problems.

Anyone know why the makers of 'the best 4x4 by far' build a transmission that is so fragile?

Cheers Nodge. Thanks for the advice. Spent enough on the IRD without having to fork out for a VCU.

    2004 TD4 transmission problems.

Cat amongst the pigeons!! If I drive my car home tomorrow (30km) and the VCU is knackered, could that shaft the newly expensively refurbed IRD?

Thanks for your prompt reply. When I get the car back this week I'll carry out the OWUT. Cheers.

    2004 TD4 transmission problems.

Hi Guys. An update on my post of the 19th Dec last year. Turns out that the whooshing noise was caused by a failed bearing in the IRD which was allowing something big and spinny to rub on the inside of the casing. The IRD has been away to a specialist in northern Spain and has been re-built. I...

    2004 TD4 transmission problems.

Would worn vcu support bearings produce the clunk I heard when parking on full lock? That was the most worrying bit!!

    2004 TD4 transmission problems.

The mechanic wasn't talking specifically about my vcu, he thought that none of them contain fluid. The OWUT was done at the side of the road, so not at all scientifically. I thought the vcu was the likely cause of the problem so I jacked a wheel up and was able to turn the wheel by hand, with...

    2004 TD4 transmission problems.

Hi again. Another problem with my TD4, I wonder if anyone can shed any light? Driving this morning, there was a strange noise, which I think is transmission related. Above 2500 rpm the only way I can describe the noise is a loud whoosh (ish). It sounded like excess wind noise. It does not...

    Freelander 1 2004 TD4 wheel arch access/inspection panel

I noticed that the access/inspection panels in the front wheel arch plastic linings were missing on my car. I have a couple of replacements which appear to just slot in place. They didn't come with any fixings and don't feel all that secure when just slotted in. Anybody know if they should be...

    Freelander 1 TD4 oil leak

I understand there should be a fibre washer between the cover and the mounting hole. Is that correct?

    Freelander 1 Tyres

Thanks. Am I right in assuming the VCU should be changed as a matter of course at around 70k miles?
