    Freelander 1 Driveshaft/IRD

Thanks again Nodge, you've put my mind at rest. Now I just need to find the source of the clunk as I pull away. As you say, it could be slight play in the propshaft being taken up. To prove that definitively, I suppose I could drop the propshaft. Should I be worried about a 42 second OWUT time...

    Freelander 1 Driveshaft/IRD

Thanks Nodge. I've just been out again an measured as accurately as I can. The play is enough so I can hear it when I move the the inboard end of the driveshaft up and down or front to back. Where the shaft enters the IRD, the play is minimal but that translates to around 1mm of movement at the...

    Freelander 1 Driveshaft/IRD

I have been posting in the "what have you done today" thread but thought I should start a new thread as it appears my problems are bigger than I thought! I originally thought that I had excessive play in both front driveshafts but I've been back under the car today and it seems I was mistaken...

What have you done to your Freelander today

I've had the car 10 years and when I bought it, the tyres were non matched, least worn on the front. Not sure how long it had been driven like that and I will admit to not knowing much about the FL1 transmission at that stage. Soon realised the error of mine/previous owners ways after spending a...

What have you done to your Freelander today

    231,000 km, about 143,500 miles.

What have you done to your Freelander today

Thanks Alibro but thats not good news as all four driveshafts seem to have a similar amount of play. I get a small clunk when pulling away which I now assume must be coming from a driveshaft.

What have you done to your Freelander today

Forgot to mention, rotated tyres front to back. All 4 were new 5000km ago, difference in tread depth was less than half a millimetre so hopefully the VCU won't be affected.

What have you done to your Freelander today

I agree regarding the magnetic pick-up tool and I've just bought a couple of magnetic trays so I can hopefully stop bits reaching the undertray! Changed the fuel filter on my '04 TD4, not my favourite job but at least it doesn't need doing often. Lower engine tie bar was getting a bit soft so...

Freelander 1 TD4 Sport seems sluggish.

EGR delete kit fitted some time ago. Just to make me into a liar, the car has performed perfectly today, pulling well from low revs but no caravan attached. Stern test tomorrow though, heading through the Picos de Europa with the caravan on!! I'll keep you posted. Thanks for all the advice.

Freelander 1 TD4 Sport seems sluggish.

If I unplug the MAF while we are away and performance is better, will it cause problems if I run it like that for a few days, until we get home?

Freelander 1 TD4 Sport seems sluggish.

Cheers Nodge. Should the turbo start to spool up below 2000 rpm? I seem to recall it doing so but could be mistaken!

Freelander 1 TD4 Sport seems sluggish.

Hi everyone. Hope you're all well and staying safe. Not posted for a while as I've had no problems (jinx?) but I've been following many threads with interest. We've just set off on a trip here in Spain, towing a 1150kg caravan for the first time. All is going well and being the first time with a...

    IRD/Gearbox... we made it wrong...

If tyres are rotated say every 3k miles, doesn't that mean that at some stage the front tyres will have more tread than the rears, or is the difference so minimal as to not cause any problems?

    Freelander 2 diff and Haldex

If there is a Haldex problem, the dash would normally show a message 'transmission fault - reduced traction' and the Haldex would be disengaged, putting the car in to 2WD.

    Freelander 2 diff and Haldex

There are people on here far more knowledgeable than me but I would try a service of the Haldex before I replaced it. Think fluid and filter cost around £60. Not sure about the diff!!

    Freelander 2 diff and Haldex

Looks like my reply arrived after a couple more posts (slow typing)!!

    Freelander 2 diff and Haldex

Sorry you've had problems but as both replies above suggest, previous maintenance is paramount. Regular servicing of the Haldex (there is only one bolted to the front of the rear diff and certainly no VCU on a FL2) would probably have saved the diff. I think most suggest a filter and fluid...

    Freelander vote

Can't comment on the FL2 as I've only experienced one from the passenger seat but my TD4 Sport is the perfect compromise for me here in Spain. Fun to drive when pressing on and perfectly capable when the tarmac runs out.

    Freelander 1 TD4 Sport tyres.

Thanks for the info. I'll have a look for them here in Spain.

    Freelander 1 TD4 Sport tyres.

Thanks TSR2. As they are a winter tyre, are they any good in the dry?
