    265/65/16 on the Bonnet

I have 235/75 R16 BF Goodrich. One on the back one on the bonnet. Tires are awesome. 10,000km of Africa on two four year old and two three year old BF's - no puntures. 11,000km more of Africa (and counting) having replaced the four year olds for new on the front and no puntures. If I was...

    Expedition Cooking

Problem with the twist ons is that once their 'on' they're no until they're finished. That's why I got an MSR Pocket Rocket which is awesomely fast and having burned can be undone from the canister and put back in its carry box after about a minute - it takes up about the space of two packets...

    African Visa Charges

I while ago when I was planning my trip I enquired about visa/vehicle import charges for Africa and didn't get much response. For anyone you needs relatively up to date ones here they are so far. If anyone is interested I'll update them over the next two weeks until the trip is finished...

Tracks4Africa - Sorry for posting here

Hiya, I bought Tracks4Africa the other day and am currently downloading the Apple mac files. The thing is I'm doing it over a bluetooth/edge connection 'cause I'm on the Wild Coast of South Africa with no other reception. The files are numbered 9051-14 - does anyone know what areas these...

Whats a good tyre for africa

I have BFG 235/75 in South Africa and will replace with the same when I get to Nairobi. It's the most common tire on LR's here and easy to get hold of. It's about £120 a tire which I have no idea if it's competitive in the U.K. but £45 cheaper than the Grabbers 3 days to go 'til I leave- scary

    What Landy?

10,000km through SA, Namibia, briefly Zambia and Zimbabwe and lots of Botswana for 5 weeks + 1 week in Gabarone for a new alternator was approx £5000 inclusive of everything but we mixed camping with occasional pampering (private lodges and boat trips) and if we did it again more efficiently we...

    Departing 15th May - Visas?

Cape to Cairo - Cape to Chi... same/same! EDIT: Done some serious visa/carnet research on the route and will edit original or post new on planned stuff and then post actual experiences - just bearing in mind I'm on an S.A. plated landy (RHUBARB - WP) which makes it a bit easier in Southern Africa.

...the lady was (whatever you may make of her methods) trying to help her boyfriend sort his 90 - which makes her alright in my book.

    Fuel solenoid

In South Africa lots of older cars I've driven (and there's been lots my mate owning a classic car hire place) have anti hijack/theft devices. They work in one of two ways. Either a master switch arrangement - normally just a simple toggle switch hidden somewhere unlikely that must be...

    Departing 15th May - Visas?

Thanks - a day in front of my laptop suggests we're ok as far as Sudan. It helps the vehicle is on South African plates as far as Kenya.

Which Fridge - Luna or Engel?

I got a National Luna 40l last week and it's awesome. It has a lower power draw than the Engel and is either Aluminum or Stainless (Mine's alu) making it far more rugged than the Engel which I frequently see with cracked plastic housings. It also has a thermostat you can set to temperature...

    Which spare parts to take?

Nick from Foleys, Livingstone Zambia who flushed my radiator for me on a recent trip recommended in an article in a South African magazine the following, "drive belt, seal kit for the clutch slave and master cylinder, prop UJ and oil seals." He sees lots of overlanders so has plenty of...

running your car on vegtable oil

I'm trying to work out from this thread whether or not if stuck for fuel on my Cape - Chichester trip leaving on 25th May - I could simply top up with 30% veg oil in my 1998 300tdi to add some range? I'm leaning towards yes, but can anyone confirm this?

    Southern Africa in a 90

I did the same trip in my 90. A drawer system is great, ours takes four ammo boxes and is made by Alucab. I have a hannibal r/t and 40l National Luna fridge. Beware if you mount the fridge on a slider system - the rail will cost you flat storage space - we mounted ours behind the drivers seat...

    any experience with satelite phones

P.S. Don't even think about cellphones for emergencies - there is no reception outside of towns. Our landy fell over in the middle of the Kalahari when we reckon we were the only people in the northern half, 6 days walk to help anyone?

    any experience with satelite phones

Just bought an Iridium 9555 having previously rented a 9505. Much smaller and quicker to acquire a signal than the 9505. Buy from cellhire.co.uk for £995 (phone only) then buy 300 minutes prepaid African minutes from satphone.co.uk for about £300. It's the cheapest way to do it but beware...
