Had a similar problem on the wifes 110, it was the alternator at fault, this caused the battery light on the dashboard to be illuminated even when the ignition was off. If you have a spare alternator stick it on to see if it solves your problem.

My mate has just removed the head on his 200 Tdi to replace it with a gas flowed one. His lump has done 179k and still has the honing marks in the bores.
