Totally clueless, just bought one on ebay, 1979-1980??

Back box is about £15. Get the gasket and 4 bolts also as you'll probably have to cut the old one off. I did mine in the summer, no need even to jack the car up. Good luck with your new Landy (btw it's a series 3, not a defender, but you've probably already noticed that!)

    Land rover minute

Yes, a few years ago I drove round the ccorner from the test, hit a speed bump and lost half my exhaust. I debated going back but decided against it!

I'm gonna have to change the oils I guess

Just be aware you need 12 pints for the engine + filter on a 2.286 engine. Don't buy just one can!

    Handbrake gone

You can do all the above checks by removing the middle seat and the plate under it. This lets you see easily how the hand brake lever pulls up, via the bell crank, and pulls out the rod which actuates the brake in the back of the drum. If you do that first you may have a better idea of why the...

IE keeps hanging when I try to open threads

What a lot of helpfull comments! I have found in the past week or so (using IE7), that a site called uk.hosting.adjug.com is causing this problem, and, if you google it, you'll find it is affecting many other club sites. Unfortunately I can't open your thumbnail as opening attachments is one...

    Cat flap tailgate parts

Make sure you've got the right stays for the top tailgate - they bloody hurt when they fall on your head!

    A friend indeed!

From 1974, it's likely to have the old type of oil filter (You are going to change the filter, aren't you?) This offers another opportunity to see oil spewing everywhere. When changing this, remove the casing, complete with the old filter cartridge, and dump the cartridge. Then clean the...

Rare and Vintage Series 1 Trialing Footage

Thanks for the film. So good to see Land Rovers as they left the factory, with no stupid wheels, winches, or other bolt-ons, and probably all with the original tiny engines, still doing what they were made for, brilliantly. When I started going to off-road events, much later than 1963, most of...

    mpg and cruising speed.

Mine is a station wagon, so I don't know if they have higher gearing, but I reckon to get 18-19 mpg. I can wind it up over 50 if the road is long enough, but I might cruise a little slower than that. I always find the gears make so much noise I can't hear the engine!

Red paint? 'Carmichael'? Doesn't that suggest it's been a fire engine at some time? aren't old Landrovers interesting??:)

    'stop running this script'

re: running AV scan - it is scheduled to run weekly, and it has got rid of some nasty problems in the past. The scans recently haven't flagged anything up though. Whatever has happened, the site is now fine for me. Perhaps logging on at 10:30 pm helps?

    wiper problems!!!! series 3

Definitely worth checking the earth. In my previous Landy (S3) the wipers packed up, and I found after several frustrating days that the earth was clipped on to the windscreen (or rather had come unclipped). It was a proper connection, but may have been added by a previous owner (so many!)...

    Door lock help

Those anti-burst locks won't lock if they are not fully shut. I have to slam one of my doors quite hard before the key will turn all the way (same with the inside slidy thing). Have you tried 'locking' the door while it is open? The bit with the U-shaped cutout should come right down, and...

Yes, I'll have a go, but AVG updates itself every day anyway. Funny how sometimes new versions of software are worse than the old ones. I won't be beaten by a machine! Now, where's my lump hammer...

    Door trim fitting?

"...exmoor trim door cards? Any experience with them? and has anyone made their own? and how the hell do they fit? " Mine are held on with randomly-spaced self-tapping screws. Come on, it's a Land-Rover!.

Well, I left it for a week, and today it seems ok again. Has anything been altered or was it just my pc showing its independence?? I'm so glad I don't have to leave this lively site. :)
