pipe on top of carb keeps falling off

I don't know if it's standard but on mine there is a short length of rubber hose which fits over the air intake pipe (1 clip) and the top of the carb (2nd clip). That way you are tightening the clip on a rubber hose not a metal pipe. It may not be original but it works!

    fixing Tyre to bonnet

Yes, the bolts should go right through. They come through quite a long way - I was concerned at how close they might get to the rocker, but they are ok.

Richard Hammond driving landy up a dam

I watched this episode and I was wincing as Hammond drove a beautiful Series I along the wet beach and through the salt water. I really hope someone was waiting with a freshwater hose as soon as he finished playing. For a man who clearly does love Land rovers I should have thought he could...

19 Y/O wanting to buy first defender. help please

Also, if the landy has been amended, altered, improved, etc, consider whether that is actually an improvement. If you get one 'as original' you'll have far less bother with spares and replacement parts. I know some engine replacements do improve the performance etc, but for a first vehicle...

19 Y/O wanting to buy first defender. help please

There are at least four Land Rover magazines on sale monthly. They all have 'for sale' sections, so you could get some idea of what's on offer. [ It's odd but I always find that anything that looks hopeful is at the other end of the country.] Good luck with whatever you finally choose!

    what's missing under the bonnet

But mine's got a hole in the dish where the wheel fits, which allows water to run through. It means, I suppose, that if you open the bonnet after it's been raining, most of the water has already run through, rather than being thrown into the channel on the bulkhead.

    Road tax exemption pre 1975?

I'm going to be tax exempt in April too. I queried with DVLA how I get their monthly DD to stop when the Landy becomes exempt. They said I had to send in the log book, in March, with a change of status [?] to 'Historic vehicle'. I can't see why they can't do it automatically, but, for the...

I presume the cup holders are Whitworth? Or is it one Whitworth and one AF? Very nice motor. :-)

    SWB Safari's

Hi, I have a 1974 SWB Station Wagon. It has had new seats in the back, but you must bear in mind that these are far from ideal in terms of modern elf and safety, and also not terribly comfortable for long journeys. My kids love the experience of travelling in a moving gang hut. Because of the...

    brake drum screws

Also, if the drum doesn't want to come off, you can put one of the screws in the threaded hole provided, and help it to move. At least that it how series work.

    Learning curve ahoy!

...and a good grease gun. There are nipples on both prop shafts and, if you're lucky, on the track rod ends. It's well worth keeping them full of nice clean grease, to avoid rust and failure later. You'll find that you spend a lot of time lying under it, which is easy on a Landy, without...

What have you done to your tratter today?

Added 1 1/2 pints of oil to the main gearbox; took 1/2 pint out of the transfer box. What a waste... ah I know! Mixed with diesel and painted the road springs and any rusty bits I could reach. The road is lovely and waterproof now, and I just hope some stays stuck to the chassis. I thought...

Series Roof, extra panel on top and vents.

Yes, very good for cooling. Bit of a b*gger when you forget to close them and it rains, though.

Series Roof, extra panel on top and vents.

..but my CSW has four opening vents, but no tropical roof above. No sign that it ever did have. So tropical or not?

MOT and the rear cross beam.

My crossmember has several neat round holes, some with rubber grommets. That seems to be acceptable.
