    Mileage Query

I agree - some problems may not be apparent till the engine etc have warmed up. For instance my gearbox changes smoothly while the oil is cold and thick, but the synchromesh is weak, and changes need care once the oil has thinned.

What mileage is your Series Land Rover on?

Well it says 32826 which I'm sure is genuine. Divide that by 18 gives 1823 gallons of petrol. About £6 a gallon now, but in 1974 less than £1. Did about 400 miles last year, but it was laid up for 6 months. I still love driving it, even in this cold!

    Defender water ingress manual

I thought threads were always screwed (sorry)

immanent failure or a new quirk?

Early in my ownership I replaced all the screws etc holding the passenger floor down. Removing that (5-10 min) lets me fill the gearbox from above - much easier than lying in a puddle squeezing a long-necked filler.

    Just bought a 90

Well, brake fluid shouldn't be black, so obviously was time for a refurbish anyway. As far as ' Just had it out for an unnecessary drive ', isn't that what it's all about? I have a nice real car, with heating, comfy seats etc, but I still enjoy an unnecessary drive whenever I can. Best wishes. :)

Series 3 Starter Motor + terminal loose, can it be tightened?

Be careful not to overtighten. I sheared one of the terminals on my alternator once; luckily had enough left to bodge it, but it didn't need much force to break it.

Series 3 Very stiff clutch problem

And make sure it has the correct return spring, going from the top of the pedal to the top of the footboard (name?). It could have been bodged if the original snapped.

    New door top question

"They push a bit of plastic up through a hole and that jams the window shut." I find the moss in the channel does that quite well. :)

Series 3 How to start!! Red key

The switches you describe will be 1) for the panel lights (and interior light if you have one, and if the switch has three positions) and 2) for the heater blower.

    What is this?

Incidentally, that brass chain sitting on top of the radiator should probably be fastened to the radiator filler cap, to avoid losing it. :)

    Good buy?

I too have had a Perkins 4.203. Wonderful engine, but slow and noisy. Would drive up the roof of a house, it had that much torque. Unfortunately it twice broke the transmission - once the gearbox mainshaft, then pulled the middle out of the clutch plate. I loved it, but it's much stronger...

    Series 3 bonnet pin help

Sorry, that hole is a drain for the water in the wheel well - definitely not for a bonnet catch.

Can we nominate them for Top Gear, please?

    Series III, worth buying?

My 1974 series 'says' 35,000 miles. I'd really like to believe it. 66,000 would be really good.

    Door Hinge Screw Size

When I needed to remove my hinges I bought an impact driver, expecting a lot of trouble. The screws actually came out quite easily, using my biggest Phillips screwdriver. I'm not boasting, but it is worth trying before you assume the worst!

    programme on tother night

Yes, it's been on before. 'This turbo really needs rebuilding - oops, can't get the parts - ok it's rebuilt and it's fine'. I wish I had some of that magic fairy dust. They made a great play on leaving it original, fair enough, but I wondered if the turbo could have been replaced and no-one...

What to do about swivel balls

Also, you should really fit new brake shoes both sides, so they balance. They're not dear. BUT if you think you can clean the oil off satisfactorily, a good idea is to put one from that side on the other side, and the uncontaminated one on the repaired side, again, so they match. Not...

    programme on tother night

They were comparing a series L-R, an early Range Rover, a sports car and a Ford saloon. How could you make a comparison? Vote for the 'best car for the countryside' went to the series. Totally pointless programme imho. I really hope these 'experts' are only pretending to be thick.

    Soft Top Weather

I remember taking the canvas off my LWB years ago, thinking to get some lovely fresh air. What I got was the air flowing over the windscreen, hitting the inside of the rear body, picking up all the loose sh*t on the floor, and blowing it all back in my face. Not too refreshing as I remember it.

Isn't it cheating to make them all blurry, or was it getting too easy?
