A few questions I am new to Land Rovers.

One minor advantage is that you can lie underneath without having to jack it up! Useful for changing the oil. I think one thing to bear in mind is that, yes, they will put up with a lot of neglect, but, in the end, such neglect has to be paid for. For instance, on my 1974 88" there are 8 or...

    S3 towing capability

The last time I towed with my series 3 (a small horse box) the brake was seized on. I pulled it a few feet but the wheels were just sliding. A strategic whack freed it. So, when you know it will pull on, best make sure it will also release.

"Took it out, gave it a clean and then it started working" - welcome to the world of Land Rovers!

    Chequerplate

For me its only use is on top of the wings, so you don't dent them when you stand on them. (Why would you stand on the wings? I can't remember when I did that but I know I have done). Also protects them against scratches from the toolbox when you are delving in the engine bay.

    series 2a - thoughts

Side mounted tailgate and unusual bumpers. Someone had a good imagination. It would be interesting to find some history, but probably unlikely. Apart from the chequer plate I can't see anything negative so far...

Series 2 Rear Axle Dust Cover

If the hub is leaking oil I'd prefer to see the evidence on the outside of the wheel, and fix it before it contaminates the brake shoes. The seal in the hub is where you should be looking, in my experience. Others may disagree of course.

    Series 3 Mixture/Servicing/Idling/who knows

re the oil bath : I had a problem with my newly-acquired 2 1/4 petrol, running very rich. The garage adjusted the carb for the mot. Then I noticed that the slots in the side of the top part of the filter housing were almost completely clogged with crud. That's where it sucks the air in. When...

Smell of burning the speado no working

Try touching the brake discs when you stop. If they are so hot they burn your finger, the burning smell could be the brake(s) binding. I speak from recent experience! Once smelt, never forgotten.

    It's grim up north

I can remember working in places like that, but we never thought 'o this is interesting'. As train drivers welcomed diesels after steam, we preferred the modern. Now, to visit these old places is fascinating, but actually living and working like that was never romantic. I do agree about the...

    Front wing rot

"Fit the plate from under the wing" amen to that. You can then slather it with anti-corrosion protection and it won't show. I think one of the fixing screws is also the earth, so make sure you have a good tight connection.

"The noise stops conversation and renders the radio useless" I discovered Meatloaf's Bat out of Hell in this way. It was the only thing I could hear above my Perkins 3.403!

    Seatbox attaching

I believe most of the water comes down from above, not up from below, but I suppose it depends on how deep the stream you're fording is!

rolling m.o.t. status like tax exempt

"tax isn't rolling ,,,its for vehicles 1973 and older i think" sorry, that's no longer the case. For about four or five years now, once your vehicle reaches 40 years old, it becomes tax exempt. But you have to apply - it isn't automatic. My 1974 88" has enjoyed free tax for three years now.

When I had the rear cross member replaced recently, I kept the old one so I could see where it had corroded. Turned out to be everywhere!

    Stopped leaking despite rain

Surely if you block the hole in the gutter the water will simply overflow? Mine overflows on the side, despite the hole being there on the front!
