Plastic Radiator plug - yes they fail

Hi James, yep the rad appears to be ok eg hot all over but although a new stat has improved the overheating it still got a bit hot towing during a retest with brass bung and I suspect when summer hits and there's a 600kg horse in the trailer it will get too hot. I'll try a new water pump next...

Plastic Radiator plug - yes they fail

There's a few threads mentioning to replace the plastic thermostat and radiator bungs with brass versions I can confirm the plastic bungs can fail catastrophically! Replace them now! My 96 300tdi had got a bit hot a couple of times when towing home the wifes new 1100 kg horse trailer up long...

    abs scare

Hi was your abs warning light on when this happened? If so I think this is a common fault reported elsewhere on this forum, mine does it but only if the sensor has caused an air gap abs fault to be indicated first which it does every so often, usually during a long drive or if I hit a large...

    Power steering leak

The way to tell for sure if it's the pressure pipe is put the steering on full lock and you will see oil spray out of a pressure pipe with a leak. In nz the hose suppliers will not crimp new hose onto old pipes on pas but they will hard solder threaded unions into the metal pipe and supply a...

What's the difference between Jap and EU 300tdi Autos?

For example ref spec per country, my 96 "NZ new" 300tdi does not have EGR and has mechanical fuel pump. The jap grey imports to NZ of which there are loads here usually have been clocked and are "loaded" eg every electrical extra and emission control plus EGR and ECM NZ new aren't rusty no...

    Swivel Kit

If it's shims you are missing yes you need them and the thickness you need is decided by the book figure for force to turn the swivel when the correct amount of shims is fitted. Not fitting any shims will probably result in stiff steering and having to buy another set of swivel bearings. Shims...

abs light on, cannot clear fault code

I'm also in darkest nz, I second the post above the key is to either power off or disconnect the pins at the right time in the blink cycle....otherwise the fault does not clear.

replacement of swivel, ball as well.

If youve got abs you need different top swivel bearing to non abs If the bolts to axle are stuck heat them as it might be the land rover thread lock making a PITA to remove Yep I've done this job.......

    lever on fuel pump

By coincidence I cleaned the sedimenter out last night a PITA job, breaking the plastic drain screw in the process :violin: so had to temp fit a 8mm bolt in its place and once it was all back together then found that lift pump lever moves but does stuff all I even turned the engine to make sure...

    over heating +pressurising 300tdi issues

Hi bump, to accurately test a heads flatness needs expensive equipment eg mill and dial gauge or surface plate etc A straight edge and feeler gauges can be used to check it less accurately, also maybe just see how flat it fits on the block. But I'd suggest you look at the gasket first and go...

    over heating +pressurising 300tdi issues

Totally agree James and surely it's worth taking the head for a look see before swapping the motor? Sniff test might not work with a diesel.

    over heating +pressurising 300tdi issues

A cracked head leaking between cylinder and water gallery can show as bubbles in the header tank when the cap is off, or a constant leaking sound of air from the filler cap but it won't always show up that way.

    over heating +pressurising 300tdi issues

You won't want to hear this but a cracked head can cause pressurization and resultant water loss?

Fed up - ongoing disco probs

When taking the swivel off the axle one of the special bolts with odd heads sheared off much to my surprise it was easy to drill it and use an easy out thread extractor to get the broken bit out of the axle BUT the secret was to heat the axle up with a heat gun first to melt what seemed to land...

Auf weisersen pet I bought a disco cos my hilux surf is rubbish at towing the wifes Horse Trailer After seeing yours I'm wondering if I can get away with modding the disco to look like yours now....all in the interest of making it a better tower of course .

    Dripping hub

Have a look at the manuals but if there is oil in the wheel bearing you will have to replace an oil seal somewhere, I think oil can get from the diff to swivel through a duff seal and from swivel to wheel bearing as well, when another seal is fooked.
