Disco 1 Head gasket fail after serpentine belt broke

Hi, I’ve had the ‘96 300tdi nearly 10 years now and its over heated a few times during that time, shortly after buying it I did a poor belt, expansion tank and hose replacement job and did not properly refill it hence no heater (my fault) and a really bad overheating incident followed, then that...

My "project" Land Rover Discovery 300Tdi

Its a long time ago but i think the sensors lever out with a small screwdriver (rather than just tug on the wire!). The issue actually is that they tend to work there way out of position by themselves, and cause an ABS light due to poor signal, so owners periodically tap them back down again...

Td5 Discovery Revs out of control

There are reports on the net that 300tdi engines can destroy themselves when the turbo bearings wear and allow engine oil into the inlet.....the only way to stop carnage is to block off air supply, or somehow stall the engine. . Whatever you do I guess you need to be prepared for thiS...

    Disco 1 Possible Immobiliser issue?

Hi porky, our cars might be more similar than one would expect, mine has a mechanical injector pump, no EGR, but has got ABS (dammit) and SRS (dammit) and IF it has got an ecu it has not given me trouble yet and I don’t know where it is. It might have a DDS unit to disable the engine via the...

    Disco 1 Possible Immobiliser issue?

Long shot but on my 96 300tdi my wife accidentally kicked the top of the footwell where a crash sensor is located, this turned the hazards on and it would not start with the key, I managed to hot wire the starter relay to get it going and pulled the fuse to stop the hazards. After getting home...

    Battery Dies After A Week

On my tdi, less complex electronics, it was a duff relay for the heater fan, relays can fail closed so things keeping running after you turn the ignition off, first measure the battery drain, if too high then try find the culprit.....

    intermittent starting

My 96 auto sometimes doesn’t crank (so start), rarely, lights on dash dim but no starter motor turning, I have never been able to get it to do it when I have diagnostic stuff available like a volt meter. After the issue occurs It usually cranks if I put it in and out of gear a few times, and if...

    Green trailer symbol on dash

On my 96 with normal bulbs on the trailer I just get a “flash” from the dash, sometimes, when using the indicators, I’m not sure when the light is supposed to come on, on the dash.....it’s not a legal reqt in NZ for sure.

So “k108” needs checking out.....to see what it is doing when the clutch should have power but doesn’t.

Only if the sub station, and the whatever it is called station behind that and all the wires can take the extra load ;) In NZ we will probably just run an extension cord from the nearest hot point to the charging station

D1 300TDI AC compressor shuts off and won't restart until the car is turned off then back on

Discool, you got me googling, and I found this, which (if true) means you need the VIN and engine no. to tell what “should” be in the car, I have no idea how correct this info is, it’s from a different forum.....my VIN had the “F” in the 8th digit position which appears to explain why it has no...

D1 300TDI AC compressor shuts off and won't restart until the car is turned off then back on

Here is a pic showing the A/C switch (hex shape) at the bottom and thermo housing at the top. Slightly off topic is the pic of the VIN which I have always thought was for a 96 MY, and the (I hope) mechanical injector pump. Engine is 20L3607.

D1 300TDI AC compressor shuts off and won't restart until the car is turned off then back on

When I bought my 300tdi years ago the AC didnt work, the issue was a faulty thermo switch which is near the thermostat housing, as others have said this switches off power to the AC magnetic clutch when the engine water temp gets too hot and you want all water cooling to go towards getting the...

I think fossil fuel pollution is behind the move to electric cars, and like a prior post I think it is more complex than just how much pollution a car makes during it’s life. My low polluting fiat panda cost $15k nzd to buy new in 2015, and will use 3000 gallons in 150,000 miles (circa $30,000...

My tdi is a 96, 5 door (mechanical fuel pump), and is hopeless up hills! I have to get into relaxed mode to drive it on what passes for fast roads in NZ.....(100k speed limit). I have never dared test the compression, I just assume it’s pretty knackered....it’s done over 350k km now, on...

The V8 disco’s were fetching bottom money a few years ago, even rust free low km examples going for a $1000, but now they are almost matching the diesel prices. There is an opinion here that the disco 1 is becoming “collectible” and is generally no longer used as a daily driver, so the fuel cost...
