Wobble, but maybe not death wobble?

I was just thinking about this. I was wondering if where I've been driving around for quite some time with a problem that was slowly getting worse, I wonder if that had an effect on the wheel balance over time. And now everything is tight and corrected, it's now showing that up. Last time I had...

Wobble, but maybe not death wobble?

Some of you may be aware, I've had to do some work on the front of my 90. I've finally now replaced: wheel bearings both sides, brake discs both sides, calipers and pads both sides, stub axle right side only, hub assembly right side only. Once it was all fitted, I bled the brakes and went out...

Axle identification needed due to stuck caliper bolt

Ok, so here's the back of the stub axle. I think with how this looks, including the thrust ring, my suspicions that this isn't the original axle are confirmed... I think this is off a disco 1, probably the same one that the 300tdi conversion came from. The flat part on the threading on front...

Axle identification needed due to stuck caliper bolt

Let's just say, I should have stopped when I first heard the strange noises... In the end it was brake failure that really caught my attention! There was so much play in the hub that I was pretty much driving with a wheel at an angle, cooking the brakes.

Axle identification needed due to stuck caliper bolt

I'm still struggling to identify my axle though. The stub axles I'm looking at online and in videos, look different to mine. So far the only number anywhere I can find, is in the swivel housing, it says 7011. This is a 1987 90... But I'm not convinced it's the original axle. Also, any...

Axle identification needed due to stuck caliper bolt

Joy. I doubt I'll be able to pick one of those up this weekend.

Axle identification needed due to stuck caliper bolt

Actually, is this still part of the bearing seized onto the stub axle???

Axle identification needed due to stuck caliper bolt

2 weeks later, I finally get somewhere. However, this is what I discovered under the hub... Is my stub axel useless now? Was the the cause of the inner bearing death, or the result? I take it I need to replace?

Axle identification needed due to stuck caliper bolt

Aha, noted! Thanks for this. This probably would have become more apparent once the bolt was removed. If I ever get the f**ker off

Axle identification needed due to stuck caliper bolt

Looks like this is going to be what I do. Looking on the other wheel, I can see the same bolt has a fair bit of wear too, I'm expecting the same fun again. Is there any reason these 12 point bolts were used here, i.e can I replace them with normal 6 pointers when I'm done?

Axle identification needed due to stuck caliper bolt

I've spent a good part of today trying this. It's a nightmare to get to, or get enough earth. I'm relatively inexperienced at welding but I think it would take someone very skilled to get it done while in situ

Axle identification needed due to stuck caliper bolt

I'm replacing the hub, and disk anyway, so at this rate, I'm going to be replacing the whole damn lot too. Bloody landies.

Axle identification needed due to stuck caliper bolt

Indeed, that's a concern, but I guess if I fully detach everything, and get it on a bench, I can clamp it down.

Axle identification needed due to stuck caliper bolt

Or is this going to be a lot easier if I take it all off and then take photos? Can anyone confirm if I can get the whole lot off without taking the caliper off?

Axle identification needed due to stuck caliper bolt

What started as a simple "replace some bearings and breaks" job, has ended up a disaster, thanks to the dreaded 12 sided caliper bolt being rounded off by a previous owner on the front drivers side wheel. I have literally trid everything, and I can't get anything to get it moving. I've even...

Oh god, I was on that site, but didn't search "protector" I'm going to go and have a strong word with myself about my poor internetting. Thank you

It came with my winch a few years ago unfortunately.
