Yeah I'd say the burning is exactly where the outer of the 2 bearings sits on the stub, but not all the way around the stub, only on what is the underside of it when fitted. I did check the wheel wobble, none at all, firmly held in place.

Hi All, 300tdi conversion 90. I've posted a couple of times in here about my knocking/tapping noise coming from the transmission tunnel. Essentially whatever it is, it is related to revs, i.e. it's not speed related. In 1st gear it's a whine, in 2nd it's a rapid tapping, in 3rd a little slower...

Ok here's an update, after doing several tests this weekend... Noise is 100% rev related. The higher the revs, the increase in "frequency" of tapping. I.e. in 2nd gear at the top of the rev range it's a "BABABABABABABABABBABABABABABAB" noise, very loud, almost so rapid that it's about to turn...

I drained the oils a few weeks ago, and apart from a very small number of metal particles in the gear box, not much else came out with the oils from the gear box or transfer box. I guess I'll have to try your gear inspection idea. I've never done that before though. Are there any guides anywhere?

I don't agree no sorry. The tapping increases frequency with engine revs rather than vehicle speed. I can be moving slowly but at the top end of the range for 1st and the noise is like a woodpecker!
