Help and advice from the experts

Damn you all ;) I bought a defender 110 CSW. 1996 300tdi, a ton of miles, one owner and a few jobs needed. Nothing too bad, mainly little niggly jobs and a ruddy good clean. I'll update in the relevant section as soon as I've made a list of issues and some questions.

:) Mad but not that mad, I'm surprised that I actually know what one of those is! Having spent a couple of hours surfing there seems to be far more decent (looking) Defenders out there. I've not ruled out a Series though, I just have to be more patient but that's not something I'm good at...

Well I'm not totally to blame here, it's been nag nag nag....:D

Damn you all and your Defender suggestions ;) I have to now admit that I've been tentatively glancing at a few and I have to say they do seem to fit the bill. I ideally wanted to get a series but that's not looking good and for the money I'm prepared to spend I can indeed get a 300tdi 110...

After further disappointments I have finally decided to do what I should have done at the beginning, start a wanted thread. Well, I went to do it but it seems I'm not allowed yet. I think I need to have at least 50 constructive posts before I can do that. It makes sense I suppose :( Can I...

Excellent, thank you. The owner of one of the cars in my sights has said his '65 diesel will happily sit at 45 mph all day long and occasionally you can push it to 55 but you wouldn't want to for long. He also said the heat-soak from the engine bay through the bulkhead can get a bit stifling...

I have been looking all over but I've been concentrating on the most busy selling sites where I may find the right one. That's not to say I'm not welcoming other suggestions like the one above. It does look very quiet there though compared to here. So, having been to see that horrible example...

Help and advice from the experts

Well, this weekend I have been on the LR hunt but it's not been entirely productive. I've made numerous calls, most up north (By 'ek) and been to view one close by. They vary on price and condition obviously but after talking to people selling them, I get the the impression I'm expecting too...

That would be a good idea but I'm away that weekend. I've got a viewing on Sunday now so I'll be able to have a drive, hopefully. It's been over 20 years since I last drove one  I think I'm pretty much prepared for the worst, which I think will prevent me being totally put off and...

Is any one familiar with the Alan Partridge sketch where Lynne is asking him to downgrade to a Mini Metro? This is a little similar to me here and these Defender suggestions..... I'm not driving a Defender I'm not driving a Defender I'm not driving a Defender I'm not driving a Defender...

That would be ideal but it's a good 3+ hours away by normal car but I'd be going in my MG and that would mean adding another 30 mins, at least, on to the journey. I've had a chat with the owner and he's confirmed it's Perkins 4.203, at least I think that's what he said. He's also added that...

So going by this there's a bit of a split as to the usability and reliability of these engines, hmmm. There are still others in the pipeline so with this questionable engine I may sideline this one for a couple of days until I've seen another close by. There's a risk that I'll lose it but...

Great info again! I love this forum, so much better than the last place I used to frequent :clap2: So, strong, possibly a shaft breaker and only up to about 45 unless an overdrive unit is fitted. The good news is that it does have the overdrive and he says it's been very well looked after...

That makes me feel a bit better ;) Anyone else got any input? I could be a Land Rover owner by the weekend, do I need to see a Doctor?

Help and advice from the experts

I've been scouring the usual places for suitable Land Rovers and I have a couple on my short list. One seems ideal but it has a Perkins 3.something ltr engine fitted. Given that part of my future plan was to get it converted to a 200TDI should I worry about this currently fitted non standard...

That is fantastic and yes, very well said. It pretty much mirrors what was said when I got the MG and with all the right work done it's been the most enjoyable motoring I've ever had. I have a tool kit and spares in the boot of the MG so I'll be repeating that process with the LR along...

I'm in no rush and will certainly be biding my time to get the right one, whether it be a project or a ready made galvanised chassis/200tdi conversion. Draughty I can cope with, along with uncomfortable, bouncy, etc.;)

Help and advice from the experts

I'm sure there are pros and cons for both but I'm solely talking about a series Land Rover here. I have no interest in getting a defender, no matter what benefits they may present :) It's great to hear all these thoughts though. I may be leaning towards a rolling restoration so I see the...
