    Brake pedal

Seeing as your handbrake is crap its got to be worth having a look at the rear drum brakes? Are you having to pull the handbrake up fully yet its struggling to hold? If so then its likely your self adjusters aint adjusting which would also explain the long brake pedal travel. Could be worth...

ACE block seals. What have I done wrong?? Grrr!

Are you sure all the parts were present? From my memory there is a spacer arrangement which fits around the pipes supporting them to ensure they enter the block straight and make proper contact with the seals. If any are missing then it will lead to problems for sure. I think I have some old...

Wee bit of guidance on drivetrain noise

Good idea mjrimmer......to save dropping whole prop shaft off initially, you can carefully lower down vcu onto an axle stand by releasing bearing mounting bolts, obviously ensuring weight is on axle stand and not hanging on u.js. Should help identify a rough bearing. I never thought of that with...

Wee bit of guidance on drivetrain noise

Sounds like could be one of your vcu support bearings. Easy enough to inspect and check for any obvious damage. Not too difficult to fix either. You should be able to find something if you do a search. Do you know if the vcu has been changed in its lifetime?

Vcu, gear box leak and sticking caliper? Help! Have done research now : )

Sorry never registered that line on your original post. Would have been nice of garage to give you more detail on this. Whats leaking and how much to fix would be a start. Need to establish whether its gearbox or ird that appears to be leaking. Find a decent garage and tell them your concerns...

Vcu, gear box leak and sticking caliper? Help! Have done research now : )

As jamesmartin said above, follow instructions for checking vcu with one rear wheel off the ground. If you want to be more accurate about it read threads on one wheel up test. Dont do it on the side thats suffering from hot wheel as possibility of sticking brake shoes will affect your results...

    Freelander TD4 help

Hi Sharon, Be careful on electric windows, ive never had a "relay switch" fail but have had to replace all regulator cables on mine so dont assume correct parts are being sent. As already mentioned, a properly running td4 is economical and pretty good on power and and doubts are likely to point...

    watts rear linkage

Yeh thats what I remember from mine. As an additional tip, have a look at fleabay or local breakers and see if you can get hold of an old linkage cheap. I did that with mine just in case the fitting of new bushes etc proved more difficult than expected. Went ok with vice and replacement went on...

    watts rear linkage

From what I remember its the bearing type at the actual swivel and the bushes at the outer ends of the arms, it seems logical. A lot of places sell them as a complete kit as you probably already found.

    Rear brake auto adjusters

Thanks guys, I did clean the threads up to make sure they were nice and free as well as gears on ratchet, all appeared to be in good condition. I dont know if its the fact that they were completely slack that stopped them operating initially. Time will tell. If I have any problems I, ll take up...

    Rear brake auto adjusters

Today have been having a look at rear brakes as they have been pretty poor, scraping, grinding, and not appearing to do much. It was well worthwhile as found a lot of rust on inside, and a spring missing from the passenger side wheel. Only issue I had was that on re-assembly handbrake would not...

No turbo boost in my TD5 Ideas???

Wow things certainly are conspiring against you derwendolly. Sorry to hear its not as easy as might be for some, youve certainly opened my eyes a bit, as my initial comment was based on you saying you werent so confident with working on cars but I never realised you had so far to go to a garage...

Do you know where manuals can be downloaded? I got my td5 manual easy but buggered if I can find a td4 one.

No turbo boost in my TD5 Ideas???

Do mechanics 1 and 2 work at the same shop? From what you have said it sounds like both of these fellas have a good idea what they are on about. IMHO you should choose 1 mechanic ( probably the guy with the diagnostics due to the nature of fault finding on these beasts) and give him the time to...

    American GBR CDL Kit

Yeh i know what you mean, would be better to have it engaged first, pants down before you **** etc.. I suppose in same respect, until I fit a permanent arrangement, I could nip under disco with a 10mm spanner and engage then disengage as required when boat launching.

    which one

Yours freelander 1 mate, its only the very latest shape, from about 2006 I think, that is the freelander 2. There are different manuals as they made changes to fl1 through the years, such as td4 engine....facelift model from 2003/4 etc. Surely yours will be 2001 on but prob worth making some...

    Lumpy/erratic idle TD4

A couple of doses of injector cleaner seemed to help mine a bit altho didnt stop it completely. Im planning to give my inlet pipework a good cleaning up sometime over tbe next few days so see how that goes. They are bad for fouling up with deposits because of egr.

    American GBR CDL Kit

There does seem to be some confusion now on the thread between the electric solenoid version and the home made manual linkage. Impressed with what hughdavies come up with to achieve a working and practical difflock without spending the 300 quid on the linkage, including last post for keeping...

    American GBR CDL Kit

Suppose it may be installer preference then, O/P reckoned it could be installed without removing centre console. It looks like it could be with a bit of nimble fingerdedness.

    American GBR CDL Kit

Looks neat, but didnt see any mention of cost. If centre console needs to come out anyway then probably better just fitting manual linkage as would expect it to be far more reliable. Good to have alternatives tho.
