    Heated Screen?

Had a RR Classic with plain screen, which took ages to clear. Changed to a Softdash with heated screen - brilliant! Big engines take for ever to get hot enough for the demist to be effective.

Charged to use my 90 Pickup at the Tip !!!

If you want to get rid of hardcore put it on freecycle - works well round here. Also for old doors and windows, lots of other second hand builders stuff.

    +vat

Apart from the VAT issue, many Defenders are registered as commercial, and this can have significant implications. For instance, do you use any toll bridges or roads? If so you will often pay a higher price, eg £13 instead of £6.50 on the Severn Bridge. Your insurance company may want to try...

    Nightmare day !!! MOT No2!!!

Quite a lot of women enjoy driving a big 4x4 once they get the hang of it, because it makes it much harder for other drivers (particularly vans) to try and intimidate them. And nothing but a lorry can try it on with a nice old defender!

    Defender mileage

Is even the chassis really that expensive? Is it viable to find one with a poor chassis (maybe from boat launching) and put a nice new galvanised one in?

    Diesel injector cleaner

Never used this on petrol, only diesel, but.. My engine was feeling a bit knackered, and it turned out 2 injectors were working good, one was a bit off, and one not at all. The dud was removed and sent away. Cleaned up it worked nicely. The poor one would not come out at all. I used some...

    Defender roof......

So it seems you either buy a set of panel beating tools, look on youtube for demos, and hope you can use them, or go to a panel beater, get him to do it for you. He might well do it while-you-wait, and you can get a free lesson thrown in for the future.

in need of a good anti theft idea please.

There are basically 3 types of car thief. 1. Joyrider. Not too likely to take a defender, and easily put off by almost any device, best if obvious so they haven't broken the window before seeing it. 2. Opportunist. Experienced and know where to sell the car. Will have a few gadgets to hand...

how low can my tyres go?

Go to a breaker and get 4 small(ish) wheels with rubbish tyres. If they still don't get you quite low enough, then drop the pressure. Even if they go flat, it wont do any harm then.

    Classic tailgate rubber

Now when I needed something like this a couple of years back I googled "rubber strip". Very educational!

Will there be any offroaders left?

No car has ever been legislated off the road - look at the London to Brighton run - all those cars are still 100% road legal. As for spares, well look at the market. What percentage of spares are available from non LR manufacturers? A good example is the Morris Minor. The manufacturer has not...

    2004 Discovery V6/ V8 LPG - Good idea?

The price of LPG varies much more than petrol or diesel, perhaps because in many cases the tank is not refilled very often. Check out the cost at your local suppliers, and near anywhere distant you visit regularly. On my V8 softdash I found that LPG cut my fuel bills by around a third, however...

Why was there never an auto Defender / 90 / 110?

I can see the advantages of an auto for serious off-roading - I was invited by Ford to drive an Explorer in the Brecon Beacons a few years back (why I have no idea), and the six-speed box made it a doddle once you got the feel. An auto is also brilliant in heavy town traffic. But if their...

who is cheapest insurance to go with

I was with Lancaster for my softdash, but they made such a pigs ear of it that I went to Swinton next. £146, and that's with LPG, plus only a couple of years NCB as it is my third vehicle. Lancaster said they would match, but I wanted to get away from them. Other cars are with Aviva and Post...

thick ice freezing cold window scrappers out

What's all this about ice and snow? Bit cool in the evening certainly, but ain't seen any frost yet. As for keeping the motor in the garage - no room in there, full of spares!

    what do they mean when

When the viscous coupling on my softdash transfer box seized up, the front and rear axles were effectively locked together. This resulted in a weird "skipping" feeling as the wheels on one axle would jump to release the tension that had built up. It was so weird that I only drove a few miles...

    Selling advice

A professional builder will know all the rules and regs, and be able to put a proper plate on it. Might not cost much over home built either, as they will be buying components in cheap and have all the necessary jigs to get it straight. Would definitely be worth checking out.

    I need a tablet

Try this place for a cheap tablet or laptop etc. Morgan Computers - for cheap computers, printers, digital cameras and accessories Been dealing with them for years, never had any trouble, though you need to read the specs carefully.

    Selling advice

That looks pretty neat. I wonder whether you would be best to dump the defender axle/suspension and go to a custom trailer maker (eg for towing boats) who could provide a chassis, complete with brakes etc, to sit the tub on. Should be much lighter!
