I couldn't detect any play either but, there was nothing else to change and changing out the steering ends (the ball joints only not entire rod) sorted the clunk. From what I can remember the play was up and down and not side to side on them...and not that you would notice either.

Think that's a tight VCU...just all the drive train binding up..mine use to do it until I loosened up the VCU with new fluid.

I'm with what jayridium says, As you dont know what else is going to go next on this haunted freelander of yours nodge... So was it the pinion frozen that stopped the wheels turning?

I can't really see from the pics where the damage is on the pinion and crown wheel, but If it were mine i,d replace the bearings, tidy up teeth with a file , stick some top quality extra pressure gear oil in it and see how it goes.. what actually caused the lock up? Is something welded together?

It's quite easy just a bit fiddly...about 10 bolts to remove the valve cover then, just a bolt per solinoids.

Probably one of the 3 duty solinoids, mine was doing this in all gears thou, I changed out all 3 and all was good..even thou the ones I pulled out, I could not find fault with.??? As yours is just in 2 to 3 might be the 2 to 3 solinoid.

I'd have to disagree here, had both linglong and sunny tyres on a v6 golf, and all I can say is they stuck to road like glue. I had to emergency brake in the wet once, and was totally expecting to rear end the vehicle in front, but to my surprise ,I managed to stop, with the abs not even...

Don't think it really matters with haldex, the electronics are supposed to detect when a wheel binds up, slips, stops, etc and adjust as necessary, Do the FL2's have the limited slip diff option, instead of a proper LSD (diff lock)the electronics apply the brake on the slipping wheel cross axle...

That's way to much for a haldex service, and in my opinion too much for a rear diff service...unless LR have some magic self healing fluids..
