I've just replaced my 300tdi timing belt . I've come across packing washer err1973 while perusing the internet , apparently for the idler pulley . I didn't see anything like it when doing the change . Could I have lost it and what would the consequences be if it's missing ? Thanks , Gerry .

Problem solved . It eventually occurred to me that if trying to put it on with a loose pulley was insufficient then take the pulley screw out altogether . So that is what I did and with the pulley hanging even lower the belt went on easily . Then using the breaker bar in the square hole I...

JulianF , when you zoom into your photo the way your timing belt comes off the pulley at an angle is just the way mine was when I put the new belt on . Is it supposed to be like that ? I was convinced it was misaligned and took it off again . Also the idler pulley looked to be ever so slightly...

Actually tried that too , even using the old pulleys and belt I can't get it back on . I did this job for the first and only time seven years ago and had no problems . I'm sorry I went near it now because the old belt and pulleys are like new !

I did , and they are identical . Tooth for tooth and the same numbers on the belt .

Hi Lynall , I tried all that , basically nothing works . I managed to get the belt on by putting the idler in with the belt in place , but that just resulted in a misaligned pulley and belt , so I had to take it off again .

Ratae , it's a mixture . I'll recheck them tomorrow .One of the things that really puzzles me is how the air and bad running disappear when I pull the hose off the ip outlet but reappears when I reattach the hose at the ip and pull it from the tank .. nothing adds up .

Final update . The bulb holders are indeed poorly made . If I connect two nails to the pins in the holder and then touch the bulb to the nails it lights up correctly . So the bulb clearly isn't seating properly . I'll replace both lights with the original type .

Ratae , you did well finding those diagrams . Nevertheless I do have the correct bulbs and after endless repetitive fiddling I managed to get them in and turned . They are both in the correct way , the highest pin on the bulb slotting in to the highest keyway on the holder . I now have two tail...

. The bulbs are correct and the slots in the holder correspond . They are just tight to push in and won't turn . I suspect a manufacturing fault . Hope to get a reply from seller tomorrow .

Definitely something dodgy about the holder . Bulb should not be tight to push in and should turn . Also very difficult to pull out again . Maybe the fact that the units came without bulbs says something , because I got similar style indicators from another supplier and they came fitted with bulbs .

Keyway is offset by height . Can't see the point of sticking a single in , I need brake lights .
