As Mark says 2 strips of wood fit between the rails. They are then "secured" with a leather strap that fits on the stud on the seatbox.....

Could you mount a small length of threaded bar to the seat with a hole drilled out to accept the split pin?.....

Is the motor still good? My snailbox was in far better condition than yours but the motor was just a heap of rust. If you do decide to 'upgrade' save the hamster wheel for me!.....

Is it the location of the switch you're after? On a Series 3, with no servo, it's at the Brake Pedal so have a look around there.....
