Buying a lathe and milling machine

If you want to be skimming cylinder heads then you ideally need a surface grinder not a milling machine. If you need heads skimmed, farm it out, and keep the interesting stuff to make yourself.

lidl battery charger with jump start

It will not kill the alternator, the battery even when fully flat is only going to draw ~8 amps, the headlights on your car put more of a load on the alternator than this. Even the old Lucas Series alternators were 45 amps, so more than capable of charging a flat battery and running the lights...

Buying a lathe and milling machine

Buy proper machines not mini toys, it's longer lasting, more stable, and the bigger kit is lower cost. I've got a Bridgeport Mill and a Colchester Student lathe, both 3 phase, both running on an invert from single phase. Both rewired for 220V 3 phase. Also with industrial equipment the parts...

Series 3 SWB rear springs - one broken leaf

I've run Britpart standard multi-leaf springs for years, no complaints.

Series 3 Clutch pedal at top of travel

Mine also didn't have that spacer/steel gasket but it's shown in the parts catalogue. My clutch would slip and the bite point was right at the top of travel. Adding the shim made a huge difference. I would recommend getting a couple and trying your clutch again.

Series 3 Clutch pedal at top of travel

Did you disturb the clutch slave cylinder? I had exactly the same issue on mine when I replaced everything, Clutch, thrust bearing, slave cylinder, master cylinder, pipework. It turned out that there is a steel spacer that sits between the slave cylinder and the gearbox, with this missing the...

    Car recovery from ditch

Tyres are 235-85r16 Toyo open country M&S inflated to about 25 psi. Laws of physics loose me on this one.

    Mega bargain at Halfords!

The Halfords ratchet spanner set seem to be a re-badged GearWrench set so good quality, however you can get the gearwrench set in the US for about the £30 mark and in imperial which Halfords will never do.

    Car recovery from ditch

No diff lock on the DB, just independents which I didn't need to use, weight wise your probably right that there's not much in it. I was just amazed at how much effort the Landy made it look, and how simple the tractor made it look. Just pushes me one stage closer to selling the Landy and...

    Car recovery from ditch

Had a knock on the door earlier from an elderly gentleman who had managed to reverse his Pug 208 into a ditch just down the road from my house. Only the back wheels were in the ditch but the car had grounded out in the middle and being front wheel drive was unable to pull it's self out. Simple...

    Series 3 indicator stalk problems

I had issues as well with a genuine Lucas indicator stalk not fitting correctly. The previous Britpart item was perfect, except I broke the horn wire. So in this case Britpart 1,,, Lucas 0

Series 3 Brake/clutch bleeding with syringe or eezibleed

You do have the return springs at the rear axle in the correct positions? The top one needs to go from the shoe to the pin on the back plate, not to the other shoe. If the spring is connected shoe to shoe at the top then you will have to pump the pedal at minimum twice to push both shoes back...

    Series 3 Stupid handbrake lever

I've heard people say this happens to them as well, however I'm still unsure how people are managing to hit their knees on the handbrake of a S3? Having driven mine for years and never had this issue I'm confused how your driving it to cause this to happen?

    Series 3 Brakes pulling

If your pulling to the left, check: Does your break fluid drop/need topping up every month or so? = RH Leaking cylinder Check RH Hub oil seals, if they fail you'll get oil contamination of the brake shoes. Also make sure the springs on the RH side are fitted correctly, fitting the rear top...

Time to buy paint , which finish?

You could roller and then spend hours 400 - 800 - 1200 sanding it back, then G3 compound or you could just 400 the car and spray. I'm not so sure rolling is the fastest method, or for that matter the easiest for the same finish.

    P38 4/2/1 Exhaust Manifolds for 2a V8

I had no plan when I built mine, just bought the manifolds and some 2" 304 stainless steel pipe with 1.5mm wall and 180° 2" 304 stainless steel mandrel bends, plus a 15" straight through silencer. In stead of trying to work out what angles of bend you need to buy, just get 180° bends and cut the...

    3.5L EFI - coilpack plugs & in-distro electronic ignition ?

To put 8 individual coil packs on you can forget the distributor and long ht leads. I'm embarking on just this project at the moment, you'll need a custom ECU to run the ignition, but never have points, rotor arm, dizzy cap or duff ht leads to ever worry about again. Once my conversion system...
