while your under the bonnet check that fuse box pull each relay out in turn and look and smell for burning.also check the leads from battery to starter motor they have been known to corrode inside the plastic sleeve,

ive got a front diff for a p38 sitting in my shed but its from a v8 if its any use to you 30 quid if you can collect it.

Sandy all i can say is try a L322,the p38 will soon be dumped. Ive just done exactly what your thinking of doing and would not go back to a p38 even less to a disco 3, a mate has one and its like a shed compared to a full fat RR and thats the HSE spec disco.

have a look in the right hand cubby box in the boot for the webasto receiver and telestart Ariel if its installed its behind the fuse box,a new telestart t91 fob from ebay should be around 10-15 quid if you have the other bits installed

For diagnostics there is also the iidtool from gap-diagnostics.com.this is a good bit of kit,i have it for my td6,the only down side is its vin locked to 1 car.
