It's fiddly but I will take it off tomorrow - I had a look yesterday - you have to get the battery off and take out the battery box to get access but after that it's guesswork.

Yes I am beginning to think its the nearside one as the engine seems to be twisting and if you blip it I can see the tie rid taking strain. It would match up with how it feels. Do you know of a supplier for this part? There are lots for the offside but not the nearside.

Mine is 2003 and the half face lift one - the rears are magnetic and the thinking about it the original shafts if I remember right didnt have a ring. I cant see leaving the ring on has any effect.

It's probably best to take the prop and VCU off complete - an easy job but you need star sockets. As said support the VCU with a couple of axle stands and be careful dropping it down as its heavy.

The bearing comes out from inside the housing so it has to be taken off to do the job. It doesn't look to difficult a that's stopping me is being underneath the car when it's only on axle stands - I think I will put a big jack with a block of wood under the sump as well. If I go up on ramps...
