    so that if paint gets scratched the zinc underneath prevents the steel rusting. Spun or hot dipped galvanised finish is not the best looking finish........so they paint them. car manufacturers could actually use rust resistant steel in the construction, but final build costs would be huge, so...

    Zinc provides the cathodic protection and becomes sacrificial to the steel, so covering it up defeats the point. Perhaps a waxoyl after 10 years would be of benefit.

    Just a small point, internal cab heaters do require ventilation so don't try to make car airtight and if importing car from UK, check that you can get hold of real cold weather compound tyres to fit the rims, and not the standard winter tyres marketed in the UK.

    Tip from my motorcycling days when additional oil pipes were required, small bore copper pipe can be filled with water, then stick in freezer overnight, you can then bend to any shape as the ice prevents crimping.

    Vat is reclaimable when goods are exported, he will be liable for equivalent of vat called ITT in Germany which is 16% of the declared value.

    New galvanized chassis for a 109 will be about 1800 euro's, you should be able to reclaim the vat as you will be exporting from the UK, but remember to add on the import duty to Germany plus the transport.............it ain't going to be cheap. Is your current chassis not repairable?
