    Continued indicator electrickery woes

Afternoon Continuing on from previous thread re our wiring issue - given we had got everything working ie indicators flashing as they should, hazard flashing as they should, dash lights illumniating as they should (but without satisfactorily finding an actual problem + obvious solution) I...

    Dash Ventilator grill fasteners

When we took out the dash etc tracing our electrical fault these fastenings wouldn’t budge so in the end chiselled off the heads. Anyone know the part number?? Thanks

Fuse blowing - fuel gauge, temp gauge, indicators (not hazards) full beam (not flashing)

Many thanks -we managed to get it off ok. Not looking forward to getting it all back together again! Anyhoo - again there was no obvious chafing areas, the C287 connector was actually up by the steering column, all the wires are taped together from the fuse box back to the steering column area...

Fuse blowing - fuel gauge, temp gauge, indicators (not hazards) full beam (not flashing)

Ok - removed the wheel arch sp got good access to the loom. Connecting the buzzer to the Gr/red from the LH front indicator gives a buzz. Also get a buzz from the repeated Gr/red wire. No signs of any further areas of chafing/damage to any part of the loom forward of the already discovered...

Front wheel arch liner Defender 90 - '96

So removed the wheel arch which gave easy access to the loom - no other connections on the loom with our one, just straight through to the bulkhead. Unwrapped the cables, checked all the way along the loom, had the buzzer set up, didn't find any further chafed sections and still getting a buzz...

Front wheel arch liner Defender 90 - '96

I've got the headlight out - but don't recall any earth c ables there? The earth for the front indicators is on the bulkhead according to the wiring diagram.

Front wheel arch liner Defender 90 - '96

We need to check the whole length - managed to pull some back towards the bulkhead to discover some badly damaged cores, but dealing with them didn't sort the issue so we need to look at the rest of the loom.

Front wheel arch liner Defender 90 - '96

Quick question - continuing with the saga of our electrickery problem (separate thread) - it appears that I can expose the channel through which the left side electrical harness runs from the bulkhead to the left front by removing the wheel arch 'fender' - is that correct before I go about this?

Fuse blowing - fuel gauge, temp gauge, indicators (not hazards) full beam (not flashing)

Pulled the front left loom back about 12inched - found a chafed section with bare wires on the green/red ( plus red/black??) so separated all the cores and tested for earth (from steering wheel stalk connector) expecting to have cleared the fault but still buzzing (we use a buzzer not a light) 😔😔😔

Fuse blowing - fuel gauge, temp gauge, indicators (not hazards) full beam (not flashing)

Good Afternoon - thanks again for the replies and suggestions. After a few hours of tracing wires etc we've managed to cut down the problem area - everything from the connection block on the front bulkhead going to the rear of the vehicle is ok. The fuse now immediately blows when the indicator...

Fuse blowing - fuel gauge, temp gauge, indicators (not hazards) full beam (not flashing)

No - that's one of the main problems. There is no immediate reaction to activating any of the switches. The problem just happens after a while of driving.

Fuse blowing - fuel gauge, temp gauge, indicators (not hazards) full beam (not flashing)

With some more investigation this morning my original description of the issue was not quite right. The headlights have always been working so that was erroneus. So originally the indicators, fuel and temp gauges weren't working - didn't test rear washer/wiper at that time so don't know. At this...

Fuse blowing - fuel gauge, temp gauge, indicators (not hazards) full beam (not flashing)

Usingg a probe to apply 12v to the circuit restores function of gauges, indicators, rear windscreen wiper and washer. However, if I have an indicator on, then switch on the hazards the indicator stops flashing and hazards don’t work. Switch off the switch and indicator works ok. It can’t be...

Fuse blowing - fuel gauge, temp gauge, indicators (not hazards) full beam (not flashing)

Correction - screws went in to the ventilator cap below steering wheel… Am investigating it now - it appears the hazard wiring is the culprit

Fuse blowing - fuel gauge, temp gauge, indicators (not hazards) full beam (not flashing)

Thanks for the diagram 👍 Operation Detection is today’s task. Interestingly the hazards had been working, I used them on the way back once, then went to switch them on again but they stopped working as well Wondering if the longer screws I used a couple of days ago to refit the angle piece...

Fuse blowing - fuel gauge, temp gauge, indicators (not hazards) full beam (not flashing)

Afternoon '96 300 TDI Defender 90 Noticed the fuel gauge and temp gauges not working this morning - along with the indicators and full beam. However flashing full beam works and hazards work. Traced it to the 15amp fuse in the fuse box. Changed the fuse all good and dandy. Then driving into...

Changed oil filter - now Reduced Engine Performance message

Yup we bought one after it became very apparent that the filter change was 'awkward' 🤣 given most of the YouTube vids recommended one!
