    freelander problems

Hi Lee, Dealer or private, if dealer youve got a lemon, take it back and get em to sort it. If private , then you'll have to sort yourself. 1) The dash lights, this is the infamous 3 Amigos! Just look up that on here. If lucky it will be as simple as the brake pedal proximity switch, cheap...

    An open letter to Austen

My vcu was never anything but slightly warm after a run of 12 miles the last bit being on twisty single track roads with a couple of full lock turns and a full lock reverse into my cart track to my house. On full lock turns there was a distinct braking effect and a tiny but perceptable bit of...

    An open letter to Austen

Following this thread with interest, having replaced my VCU with one of Austens about 5 months back. I was concerned my original one was on its way out because of the classic symptoms which needed no special test, granted its easier in an auto, as follows. Reverse in a straight line at tickover...

    Another knocking noise !

I had the car on a pillar lift at work a few months back to do the big 72k service, the rear bushes, diff mounts, exhaust, and sub frame mounts were OK. This is when I spotted the split ball joint rubbers on the front wishbones. With the front wheels off the ground it was spotted, on its wheels...

    Another knocking noise !

I have the identical noise too, sounds like it's from the rear, but open all the windows and its more as if it's just forward of the drivers seat backrest. I'm going to replace the lower arms anyway as both ball joint rubbers have split, so I'll add the drop arms to the shopping list too, and...

Most expensive for what it is Freelander part

The worst cases of galvanic corrosion I've seen have been between mild steel and aluminium alloy, series door skins, floors, disco door cinches, A series bmc thermostat housing studs etc. I can assure you there is no trace of corrosion on the stainless fasteners or casings on my bikes, the...

    vcu alternative

Back in the early 90's I had a Panda4x4, as an emergency stop gap between a dead 109lwb 6cyl and an early 90. It had a viscous, ird, rear diff arrangement, just like our Freelanders but with the bonus of a manually selectable 2 or 4 wd, on the main gearbox. Cant help thinking that this should...

Most expensive for what it is Freelander part

I replaced the vast majority of the fasteners on my bikes with stainless 20+ years ago. I've never had any problems.

    Would you trust your Gaylander?

Going to Isle of Jura via Applecross, Mull and Islay this summer. Both Moto Guzzis, which are much more highly strung have done similar trips, as did my ol 300TDi Disco. I've total confidence in my TD4, it's a great car.

    New VC

I agree with 2001ytd4. Bell recons are fine and they will fit decent bearings for you too.

    Poor sound quality

I have the oem set up in my 02 ES. My old Disco was treated to a full Sony X-Plod transplant, 4 3-way speakers, replacing the poor originals but keeping the original sub woofer. The Sony kit was removed with every intention of using as much as possible in the Freelander. 4 months on and its...

    mpg

My drive to work is 12 miles each way, some 30, some 40mph bits, a couple of longish 25-30mph climbs in 3rd, some queing and stop start stretches, some idling at lights etc. Average speed for the journey varies between 20 to 25mph, i.e 30-40 mins. MPG averaged for the last 3 months 29. I used to...

    First freelander

If in any doubt of the condition of the VCU budget for a recon now. There is lots of advice on here on how to check it. It's an easy DIY swap and my recommendation is go for a Bell Eng recon. The other common check points are well covered on here too. I've had series, defender and discos, all...

    Britpart for filters??

If you can get to a decent motor factor you might be surprized at how cheap a lot of Bosch service parts are. I use Eurocarparts as we have a local depot who deliver to me (we are a HGV dealership). I've also used UFI brand filters, these are OEM in everything Italian, top quality.

    IRD testing

I didnt measure the backlash in mine when I had my props off. 1/4 inch, I guess measured at the outer edge of the flange, does not sound excessive. No fore-aft or side to side play in the bearings with yours is a good sign. Does the flange turn by hand smoothly, no tight spots or roughness? It...

VCU - Where to purchase from?

I'm well pleased with my recon from Bell Engineering. They will fit good quality bearings to it too at a sensible price. Not sure I would want to trust a Britpart. Once worked for a well known LR Independant who used a lot of Britpart parts, some were ok, some not so.

    Freelander's to rescue Scotland

It's just a thought Skynet. There has just been a news item on local tv showing just how stupid some drivers have been. Two lads in a Transit going down a single track road lost all traction downhill, slid out of control for 500 yards, a hedge stopped them going over into a deep gulley. AA man...

    Snow/ICE tyres - close shave

I had Scorpions on my old Disco 1, they were fine on everything but sheet ice. Got Goodyear wranglers, 215 65 16's on the Hippo, so far so good. The track to my house is very icy, only me and a chap who lives further down are using it at present! He has a Disco 1. I've had a few Landies, tyres...

    Freelander's to rescue Scotland

A snowplough attachment for Freelanders? What a good idea! Could push all the crap Minis, Clios etc out of my way. Daft cow neighbour with mini cannot move away on the flat in 1" of snow. It's about time there were laws to penalize drivers who attempt to drive in these conditions in vehicles...

    Big Bang Theory

You will def need to check for and remove any metal nasties from inside the rear diff. Even with the prop off the diff gears that are left are still turning by the rear wheels, so it may well be that you will cause more damage to it by driving it, not to mention a possible lock up by a bit of...
