    drivers side footwell water

Ive had this on two or three cars. One was blocked aircon drain but you say you haven't got this. Another was a brand new defender TD5!!! They used a pressure washer to find and plug no less than 7 leaking seams. And a badly fitted door seal. I mention this because the dealer reckoned a...

smoking and lumpy td4 on start up

Can also be low fuel pressure. If they are any good they will check everything - there're quite a lot of possibles for this one as well as duff injectors.

Freelander 1 TD4 05 Strange electrical buzzing noise

+1 on fuel pump and get the proper one. IIRC the 05 is pump in the wheel arch not the tank, and is easier to replace. Also fit new fuel filter at the same time. (nearly typed fool filter: Oh! if only such a part existed!) I've had two pumps go, both on 10 year old TD4 cars. So that's spot on...

    FREELANDER HELP!! Handbreak problems

Mmm. is the pedal also going a long way?...mine was doing this, and then I thought that the brakes might well be self adjusting, so I stopped, pumped them and stood on them, and hey presto, the pedal got 'shorter' and the handbrake worked better too - not that I hardly ever use it. It always...

Can they be checked off the Car?

Assume the worst and price accordingly. Id say you have a good chance the VCU is OK, and the UJS, but the VCU bearings almost certainly shot. Front or rear diff? That's the big gamble, also mountings for them. Certainly possible to check all the VCU bearings and the UJs off the car - easier in...

    Gearbox oil leak?

If you have a split turbo hose then very very black oil will be dripping out. You will normally hear a hiss/whistle as the turbo spins up above about 1500 rpm too. And start to lose power too and smoke ..

    Sat nav disk

I have a disk that probably works or an iso image anyway. I burned a copy which is now in the car so it works

    TD4 won't start

yes. Start with battery and then loose terminals. If those check out OK its time to look at the solenoid. But never been a problem for me yet.

    Black Smoke

First off, I only know the old diesel - the FL1 engine - but ANY sound of air hiss on THAT was a split in a hose and meant that power was down and black smoke would appear. Basically if the engine map expects more air, and it doesn't get it due to turbo leakage, you get smoke. I strongly...

    Td4 poor cold start

Well it is a possibility. some kind of a partial short would do that. But if its easy to get to - and no idea if it is - it should be easy to whip it out and test it.

Your "pipe dreams" for your hippo

Y'know Id be happy if I just fixed all its niggling little faults and got it tidied up and resprayed from where my soon to be ex wife has keyed it.

    Td4 poor cold start

I am not a fan of bypassing systems that don't work with systems that dont really work either ;-) Its not a great idea to run an engine permanently cold. If the cold start sensing ain't working get a new cold start sensor! I have had at least one water temperature sensor say 'this car is...

    front end rattle

Yeah. see my thread on underbonnet rattles. In my case it was the coolant reservoir flopping about. Open that bonnet and start wobbling stuff around till you get the right noise. Then ramp it and start putting pressure on all suspension joints.

Golly, Don't you think he's sorted it out in the last 4 years? Thread started : 1st-November-2010

regular thumping rear transmission when cornering.

Yes. Its a classic 'old freelander' fault. The VCU bearings and the rubber mounts go after about 100k miles. Then the stiffness in the VCU itself causes the universal to wind up on corners and then teh propshaft starts thumping around. Opinions are divided as to whether this means the VCU is...

    TD4 won't start

I've been a car owner since 1968. I have replaced tens of batteries, several solenoids and occasionally starter motor brushes and the gear engagement stuff but I have NEVER replaced a 'starter motor' because it was electrically bad. Very occasionally the commutator is worn to the point of...

    Black Smoke

Actually my FL1 definitely stayed smoky for several mile after I had changed the turbo hose. I gave it an Italian tune up and that eventually fixed it.

    Td4 poor cold start

Ahem. Car motor starters are field and armature wound animals on soft iron laminations. So long as the brushes do not go high resistance - and that is something that pretty soon results in the motor not turning over at all - they wont get 'tired'. The copper can't get tired. The iron can't get...
