    Tonight 7:30pm BBC One.East midlands

Just about to watch this on iplayer. I do recall watching a panorama or similar bbc documentary along similar lines about 2 years ago. It followed a group of what appeared to be; grumpy, aged 65+ ramblers/ residents, who genuinely looked like they were enjoying causing trouble, creating a...

Running on series steel wheels and Michelin XZL

So today I fitted my spotlights which have been in storage since I bought them about a year ago. Very happy with them, and they make main beam alot brighter at night which helps on the roads, and the lanes. I took the disco out for a spin after I wired in the spots, and oddly my rev counter...

    Green Lane Repairs

Hi all, I havn't been laning for months, and took the disco out today on one of my favorite lanes, only to find it has had some maintenance done. This mainly consists of flattening the ground between ruts, filling ruts in with soil and in some places stones, to make them shallower. Cutting...

Collecting D1 this week, very excited

Reference your EGR question. I was dubious about the EGR removal but with the kit for about 6 quid (consisting of a blanking plate, a gasket and a few bolts), and a fuel economy of about 22-25MPG, I thought it has to be worth a try. I removed my EGR which was a 15 minute job. (Unbolted EGR...

Running on series steel wheels and Michelin XZL

I took her for a spin this evening just to sort the air pressures out, and did the fronts at 28psi, and the back ones at 42psi. I then drove for about 5 miles down some country lanes and drove through every muddy puddle/ gateway I could find. It's hard to tell without taking them properly off...

Running on series steel wheels and Michelin XZL

I've finished putting the wheels on this morning, and I'm between fitting my steering guard and spots which have been in hiding since I took them off my last disco. Initial impressions of these wheels on the disco is that it looks, erm agricultural. It certainly seems higher up, not so much...

    UK Trip on your own

Hi all, Not a question about expeditions in the normal sense of the word, since I'm asking about UK based trips but still; I've got some time off work ahead, and thinking about a trip to do some walking/ camping/ maybe greenlaning to either Snowdonia, Peak D, or Lake D. I live quite close...

Running on series steel wheels and Michelin XZL

Yeh I've read that they can be a bit dicey in the wet. Quick suspension question (I'm loathed to start a new thread, since I've started about 5 threads in the past week and beginning to feel like a troll)... With these wheels and tyres on the disco seems to be a tad low. I'd like it to be...

    Wheel nut chrome cap spinning

lol Yes mate definitely. The locking wheel nut caps have a dent on them normally anyway and I've never had a drama removing them. This is definitely one of the standard nuts so I'm not sure how to tackle removing it. Stupid bloody design.

Running on series steel wheels and Michelin XZL

It's definitely the nuts on the left that my disco has. I began swapping the wheels over tonight, and did the spare, and one other, until I ran into a problem trying to under a nut. Looking at the first wheel I changed though, which is a back one, it's definitely going to be getting the camel...

    Wheel nut chrome cap spinning

PS I was thinking about seeing if I could punch the cap in the middle to make a hole, and then prize the hole open and try and yank the cover off with pliers. Anyone got a better idea?

    Wheel nut chrome cap spinning

In the process of swapping my wheels over and while cracking the nuts I come across a wheel nut where the chrome cover, which I'm aware is a permanent fitting, is just spinning on the nut. The chrome cap appears to have ballooned slightly since I can't fit the standard wheel brace over it...

Running on series steel wheels and Michelin XZL

Got some wheel nuts ordered. Cheers for that link btw. Still unsure about the tyre pressures though. I think XZLs can go up to about 70psi. As a side note, they don't seem to be as popular with the hardcore off road boys as they were a few years ago. I think they're favored much more as an...

    Steering guard fitting issue?

Hi all, a few years back I got a steering guard from a disco at a breakers yard. I fitted it to my 98 tdi and it fitted fine as you would expect. When I sold the old girl, I took it off and kept it. I've just been out trying to remember how the brackets fit onto the chassis so I can fit it to...

    Camping on a greenlane

Tbh that's what I thought would most likely be the textbook answer. The reason I was hoping to camp actually on a greenlane, as opposed to near the beginning or end of one, is because I'd really like to wake up and see the sunrise and the beautiful landscape from a nice vantage point as I put...

    Camping on a greenlane

Hi all, What's the score with camping while greenlaning? They're obviously normal public rights of way so are you likely to get rudely awoken by a group of motorcross bikes trying to get past? Most of the lanes that I drive have open countryside on either side, so I could simply pull...

Running on series steel wheels and Michelin XZL

Cheers for that listerdiesel. Mine are definitely the ones on the left, with the longer bevel. I don't intend on using them anyway since from what I gather they will look pretty awful, so I'm working on getting some steel nuts.

Running on series steel wheels and Michelin XZL

From what I've found the disco alloy wheel nuts should be okay, as the spare was originally a steel wheel, and therefore the alloy nuts had a beveled edge which is whats needed for steels. I'm working on getting some steel wheel nuts from a breakers so I should be sorted anyway. My tyre...

How much MPG do you get?

The series 3 I had got me anywhere between 12-18 mpg. My first discovery (98 tdi, xs), used to hover around 28-32 mpg which I was very happy with. I've had my current discovery (96, tdi), for about 16 months now, and it's always been a little worse at around 24-27mpg. However, I decided...
